NEWS: NY Times calls U.S. aid for tsunami 'miserly'

Although oft resented, the U.S. is the most generous country the world has ever seen -- which brings to mind the Chinese proverb: "I don't know why he so hates me -- I never tried to help him."

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell took umbrage at Egeland's "stingy" quip.

He noted that U.S. aid in the tsunami disaster will top $1 billion and that the U.S. has given more aid in the last four years than any combination of developed countries.

President George Bush, also miffed at Egeland's remark, said the U.S.'s $2.4 billion in disaster relief last year was "40% of all relief aid given in the world."

While the tsunami is a catastrophic reminder of the power of nature -- it is also a reminder of America's enormous generosity.

Something for which it gets little thanks from people who should know better, like Jan Egeland.


Peter Worthington of the Toronto Sun has laid out the case well of what I said in one of my ealiar posts in this thread.

Valhall's comment about no expectation of praise is also well noted,

In a reversal of that sentiment I would also say criticism of aid, any aid is also not expected nor well recieved.

i guess that as time goes by it will become apparent that
the massive death toll numbers were/are massively inflated

daily, groups of supposed victims are found not to be washed to sea,
sure there are mass graves, hurredly fashioned--
sure there are creamations happening also....
and these actions are made newsworthy, and covered many times by many
different reports as reporters and internet blogs contribute to this hyper-
inflation of a widespread (but moderate?) tragedy.

Governments see a bonanza of relief aid & $$ the more the tragedy is multiplied!
Individuals can reap aid, $, and even insurance claims...for relatives that were supposedly creamated.
the scam artists are dancing in the streets.
The businesses too can reap insurance claims...
i can see, the forces of greed and spoils running dizzily thru the minds of
the displaced...the business world...even governments.

As much as I'd like to see the donors of the money donate to

it is their money and they have a right to do with it as they please.

You mentioned $$ getting to people in need in time. CNN, MSNBC
and FOX are all now reporting that the Rebels (terrorists) in the
region have set up illegal check points throughout Indonesia and
are shaking down the aid workers and stealing supplies and $$$.
So ... the bad guys are continueing to hurt their own. It's very sad.

Yeah, me too. It's all I've been thinking about for the past
4 or 5 days - once we really started to understand how bad it was.
I eat something or drink water and I think about the poor folks who
have nothing over there ... I sleep in clean sheets and I think about
those who are wrapping their dead in sheets (or plastic or whatever).

It's weighing heavy. I'm sooooo glad that we've got places to
donate to (Catholic Charities, Amazon.Com, etc.) It helps knowing
that we can at least give something. But you are right ... the
heart is still heavy.

I am not joking, it was on tv this morning, the preparations for the inaguration activities and a place in texas has been order to make a hat for Mr. Bush inaguration ball, a cowboy hat, to represent texas I think.

As of today, the total amount of money pledged by the Government to the disaster fund is $350 million. That money is coming from the budgets of a number agencies and Congress will have to find ways to replenish their budgets. This does not include money from the private sector.

The State Department has said all along that there would have to be assesments before the total amount of funding could be confirmed.

The "Grey Lady" has become a colorful tramp.

Ok, I know that the money is going to a good cause, but its our world leading countries in some kind of competition now?

France has promised $57 million, Britain has pledged $95 million, Sweden is sending $75.5 million and Spain is offering $68 million, although that pledge is partly in loans.

These countries increased their donations too. US now is on top with 350, what is going on?

Has this turned into a penny-pissing contest?
Amongst all the countries of the World?

On one hand, it's excellent for the countries in need.

On the other hand, It may just be a way for countries to boost
their percieved status on the World stage.

How do we know that any given country has followed through on thier pledge?

With a huge influx of cash like this, how do we know that bureaucratic wallets aren't being lined?

Or even the pockets, indirectly, of terrorist groups..
