The 777-9X has entered the detailed design phase of the program. Boeing confirmed in a video today that the 777X will have 20% more wing area, with significantly more flexible wings to allow more efficiency.

The next part of the design phase includes detailed designs at the part and assembly level, as well as hydraulic, electric, and pneumatic sub assemblies.

So far the program is on schedule, meeting the deadline set two years ago.

Dang, that interior looks very sweet...

I still think they ought to put us in medically-induced comas and load us on planes like cargo. It would be more efficient -- they could get more people on a plane that way.

Best part?

No screaming babies!

It was unveiled to the biggest opening order in history a couple years ago. There were 259 orders and commitments worth $95B on day one. There are currently 306 firm orders.

So far, does the cost-savings (fuel, ect) seem to adequately offset the price of these new jets?

Basically, does the newer designs and technology make these worth purchasing?

The -9X will carry 400 people over 9,000 miles and be 12% more efficient than any comparable sized aircraft.

I take it this will be a slow phasing in of these newer craft as the older birds get retired or sold off to low-cost carriers>?

That's up to the airlines. Boeing plans on starting deliveries around 2020 and it will be up to the airline when they put them into service and take delivery of them.
