This is one of those government programs that looks good on paper but never quite works as advertised, this time because of failed implementation. What ever happened to trust but verify.
The news is a huge kick in the pants to the EU's plans of carbon reduction.
The credits may have increased emissions by 600 million tonnes.
Here is a snippet from the article..

"That’s the finding of a new report from the Stockholm Environment Institute, which investigated carbon credits used to offset greenhouse gas emissions under a UN scheme. As one of the co-authors of the report put it, issuing these credits “was like printing money.” The BBC reports:"

"The SEI sampled 60 random projects and found a whopping 80 percent of them to be of questionable green merit. The majority of these bogus Russian and Ukrainian offsets were used by the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (the EU ETS), a program already bogged down with problems pricing carbon."

I was thinking, maybe products should have a carbon footprint number on them? That way consumers would have the choice to decide for the product that pollutes the less.

Of course, that would work in lala land where gouvernment agencies would actually do their jobs and where companies would want to find ways to pollute less instead of bribing.

Endless greed of money and power, that's what's to blame. We sadly need to change our ways, there is no other solution.

The EU-ETS (European Union Emissions Trading Scheme) created a moral hazard; heavy industries were given incentive to crank up their emissions before their baseline emissions would be measured, resulting in those same industries receiving credits that were not legitimate reflections of true emissions reductions. Thus, there were increased emissions over BAU (business as usual) and some shady projects receiving the 'go-ahead' based on those illegitimate credits.

Far simpler ways to deal with carbon emmsions.. Biochar locks carbon in the ground indefinetly a change in agricultural would put us back to preindustrial levels very quickly...

Believing that carbon offsets has been created to reduce CO2 emissions is naive. Its about banks making profits from derivatives and big oil making profits from methane replacing coal. Unfortunately this has increased the amount of methane leaking into our atmosphere from fracking etc. Methane is 87 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat.

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that China was happily making money off this. EU industries were more or less paying China to build coal plants so China would do it and then shut down the plants or never fire then up and the EU industries would claim all kinds of net carbon offsets and never once change their own practices.

It was never going to work.

"" Carbon Offsets May Have Dramatically Increased Emissions ""

Well of course it increases emissions.

What better way to "prove" CO2 is a problem?
