Insanity. That is all i can call it when someone makes a choice to end their own life, and the people left on Earth start trying to lay blame.

Yes, the hack exposed people. Yes, the hackers shouldn't do that. But, Ashley Madison should at least make half an attempt to secure this data. And it wasn't the hackers or Ashley Madison deciding to commit suicide.

Someone chooses to kill themselves, then that "blame" (if any is needed) lies solely on them, and possibly their doctor/psychologist (with some drug interactions).

Killing yourself, even when exposed as a cheat, is not "normal" behavior.

There is nothing my spouse could do that could not be forgiven.

at least once, right?

It would be quite the feat that could cause me to end a 20+ year investment of time, effort, and partnership.

Still a necessary hack.

This will be used to demonise the hack and point fingers in the opposite direction of the immoral cheaters destroying their families.

When someone who was cheated on kills themselves I'll empathise fully...

While it's the cheaters, I'm left thinking "sad, but oh well".

Couldn't agree more. If people feel responsible enough to join sites like these knowing they are putting their families futures on the line, they deserve whatever happens as a result. If dealing with the repercussions is too hard for them, maybe they should not have joined in the first place. Its a shame people have died as a result but I have no sympathy for them, I really feel for the families though having to live through this.

I applaud the hackers on this one.

Do you have evidence that those who recvd blackmail threats were not cheaters?

It's easy to say the words, the actual act itself...much more difficult.

If they played, they pay....there is a price for indiscretions.

If you play, you pay.

He chose to take his life willingly, no one took it.

What about the damage to his family after the data dump and his suicide in response to it? He played and chose to pay his way.

Sad for the family who has to deal with his selfish actions.

He certainly had life insurance and it was left to his survivors.
He paid for his funeral at least, and maybe groceries for the next year.

Today you all blame the evil male cheaters that were the worst possible human scum.

Tomorrow you will call them victims of a hetero-normitive society.

70% of the websites clients were men. Men in heterosexual relationships. Men that most likely didn't want to be "outed".

Hackers threw open that door and suicides are going to be the result.

Don't say it isn't so.

You know that life insurance often has terms that void coverage payments resulting from suicide, right.

I never said they weren't, so what's your point?

Blackmail = Extortion, whether they were cheaters or not. I have no interest in other people's lives, and to be honest I laughed to myself when I initially heard the site had been hacked. Then I heard about people who's only crime was that they live in a country where homosexuality is illegal and they used the site to get in touch with other like minded people. Some may be cheating themselves as much as their partner, that I do not know. But if they are punished by the authorities in any way, then that would be a sad thing in my book.

Thanks.

I understand why you called out the extortion claim, and agree that those that die by the sword, probably lived by it, unless they were a medieval villager.

There is legal precident(civil definitely), but I'm not sure of the statute or jurisdiction.

Sit back and wait for a legal expert to answer my question.

What I don't understand is if you are the type of sneaky person who signs up to a "have an affair" dating website whilst in a relationship, why the hell are you using your real name and a recognisable email rather than a false name and email related to that false name?

Seems ATS does not have one cheater going by the replies . Perhaps a moral compass statistic anomaly .

Death ?

Willingly ? , isn't it more likely the case that he couldn't handle the shame and fallout from the revelation so he was driven to take his own life , I don't think he would have willingly done it if his details hadn't been exposed.
