A U.S. military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told VOA pro-regime forces are “pretty weak and depleted at this point.”
Even before the most recent spate of fighting, the U.S. military assessment of Assad’s future was bleak.
“The longer the civil war goes, the more difficult it becomes for him to recruit his forces, equip his forces,” a senior military official said. “The net is steadily closing in.”

The actual title of the article is "US Sees End 'Closing In' on Syria's Assad" but I re-worked the title to fit into my conclusion for this piece. The reason being that over the years here on ATS, posters have mentioned the Proxy War between the US and its allies vs Russia, Iran and their allie-Syria. Now that the tie is getting tight around the neck of Syria's Assad, according to the article, it seems that the US and its allies will win the Proxy War and take down ASSAD which will weaken Russia and Iran militarily and logistically. However, it will also have dire consequences for the already weak stabilization in that area. If Assad goes down what then happens to all of the Russian weapons and artillery in Syria's possession? What about all of the militant groups under Assad's umbrella like the Al-Qaida linked Nusra Front, or the Islamic State group?

Why would those in power want to do this unless they want to bring on more WAR? This sounds like Saddam 2.0; the ousting of Saddam brought many unforeseen problems to the area and this will do the same to the Middle East which is already a powder keg ready to go "BOOM!" Once Assad goes down what's next? I think things will spiral out of control quickly in the M.E. What says ATS?

The whole thing is about natural gas pipelines and Russia sees any ME pipeline to Europe as a threat to their sales to Europe.
Iran wants theirs, and Qatar wants theirs.
Russia will do all they can to keep the ME unstable.

From that political standpoint, I can agree.
And I also think Russia is backing both sides to keep the fighting going.
Gazprom make billion$ from gas sales to Europe.
And I think that is a big part of the Ukraine conflicts as well.
I don't think so bro .

I was wondering why they were reopening embassies in Iran. Time to infiltrate is looming on that horizon.
