Washington (CNN)Since announcing his campaign in late June, Donald Trump has quickly leapt to the top of the Republican field, leading recent polls nationally, in Iowa and in New Hampshire. And now, for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, his gains among the Republican Party have boosted him enough to be competitive in the general election.

The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).

But Clinton still holds the cards overall in the race for the White House, leading four Republican contenders: She tops Trump and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker by 6 points each among registered voters, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by 9 points, and businesswoman Carly Fiorina by 10 points.

edition.cnn.com...

Clinton only leads both Walker and Trump by 6 points, while Clinton has fallen 9 points while Sanders has gained 10 points.

However Clinton still leads everyone but has been hurt from her email controversy.

Trump has the advantage when it comes to men and Hilary has the advantage when it comes to women. The reporting was pretty even between Trump, Clinton and Sanders but its strange that Walker is trailing Clinton by the same margin as Trump but next to nothing is mentioned about him in the article.

There is alot of information at the link they break the polls down between men and women, but for the first time Clinton has polled under 50%

It doesn't show much for the Republican party when an asshat and poser like Trump can become the front-runner in an election. I hope to god we are not represented by a man that is the epitome of a greasy used car salesmen.

In all fairness, I should say that it doesn't make the Democrats look good with Clinton leading the polls, but at least Clinton knows what the hell she's doing. Trump is just making a mockery out of the Republicans and they are eating it up.

Awesome. I love reading posts and articles in the media by people who have Trump Derangement Syndrome. This should produce some spectacular meltdowns.

I think Trump would actually be rather good as president, He has the ego, the balls, and the money. He is a self-made man, not many can step up to him. As for the Clintons, they have had their time as public servants, and only served themselves for the most part. Bill got lucky with the Dot com boom, that gave him a false sense of making the world a better place, and I think that is why many Americans are stuck with a Clinton mentality. It was all the business folks that made the Dot Com era great, not Bill and Hillary Clinton. Time for a change, No Bushes, No Clintons, No Sitting Senators. WE ARE SICK OF IT.

One of the meltdowns could be Trump himself. He is treating this election like a sprint when it actually is a marathon.
Jeb is playing it cool just waiting for Trump to stumble or burn out. The media blitz from Jeb is going to be political hype never seen before in this country.

I don't think Trump knows how to slow down or has any brakes. If the Trump train does crash it's going to be stunning to watch and I doubt he will be the only causality from a wreak like that.

Or you could be Walker and just have it handed to you by the Koch brothers....Or be a Bush and come by your money through family/Illegally (George W)....What's your point?

Gotta have money to make money and Trump does that like a BOSS!!!!!

GO Bernie!!!!

Sanders and Trump clearly have the momentum at this point. Sanders voting record is strong and undeniable the things he is running on he has the track record to prove this. Trump doesn't, I always thought Trump was a liberal Democrat and now he is the front runner for the GOP nomination. This will create more problems for him as time goes on.

People really think Trump is a self made man kinda proves this.

That is true. But that doesn't not make one a good public servant.

Trump would be an option if the US was a casino, but it is not.

My vote as well.

Trump Derangement Syndrome will burn out eventually. Not the deranged Donald himself, just his "dey terk our jerbs!" crowd will inevitably remember what a president does and maybe get a little scared.

In the republican party it does not matter if you're values have been consistent, have been a liberal democrat or anything else for that matter. As long as you talk the way they want you to talk and will follow the party agenda...you're golden.

He scares me as well but who is to say that any of these "lifers" will do anything but what we have seen over the last 3 decades PLUS?

I am all for trying new things....The same old crap is getting old and crippling our country in the process! What's the worst he could do? Still have to get bills passed the same way, still have to have the same processes in place...If he helps fix some of them because he knows business, bring on the Don!

You should call the Federal Reserve and their friends on wall street because they don't seem to be aware of this.

Trump doesn't have any liquid assets. All his money is tied up in Real Estate....his cash won't last long enough for him to get thru the primaries.

www.politico.com...

plus his tax problems are soon to be revealed...you'll see....along with some other nasty skeletons, real nasty!!!

If Trump thinks his tough talk is going to scare off the GOP oligarchy. He really needs to consider who the big dogs he is dealing with are.

And the fellow hasn't even began to whip out his checkbook yet (although he did have a full page ad in the National Enquirer - no, I don't read it, but a family member does).

Trump must be running one of the most cost effective campaigns ever considering the exposure and momentum he is getting from "earned" media coverage. Bush is having to spend his money early because of it. He just launched a $10 million ad campaign and I'm sure he didn't want to do that this early in the race.
