Ecuador President Rafael Correa has declared a state of emergency over increasing activity at the Cotopaxi volcano near the capital, Quito.

The declaration gives authorities more flexibility in using government funds to address the situation.

Officials evacuated several hundred people from nearby villages after the volcano began to erupt on Friday.

Ecuador declares state of emergency over volcano

What the BBC headline story is not telling us is the Government in Ecuador is also limiting some basic Constitutional rights and banning media from publishing "unauthorized" information !!

We all understand the turmoil and disaster that a volcano can cause.

But what's up with the government crackdowns?

Are they afraid of something else ?

What kind of government does this?

Hmmm.

hmm, a government that prepares for the worst BEFORE a disaster happens ( or potentially), hmm, they must be up to something....

they should learn from the best and send minimal help after disasters happen and citizens begin to loot raid and fend for their families for survival.

/sarcasm

there's no story here, there's no subversive agenda . its precautionary.

The decree, which includes suspending some constitutional rights and banning media from publishing unauthorized information, will allow the government to redirect budgeted funds for a possible emergency and prevent rumors from inciting panic, President Rafael Correa said in his weekly television and radio address to the nation. The measures will last up to 60 days.

This is pretty standard when a government sees a disaster on the horizon. It allows budgets to be changed in order to accommodate speedy relief efforts.
I'm not sure of the law in Ecuador but in the US, many states have emergency declaration laws that allow no-bid contracts to be let during emergency situations. Yes, there are times that these laws get abused by corrupt officials but there are also many people helped by these same actions.
I have no idea why a government would suspend freedom of information/publication....if indeed it existed before the disaster.

Article 19. The law shall regulate the prevalence of contents for informative, educational and cultural purposes in the programming of the media, and shall foster the creation of spaces for the dissemination of independent national production. It is forbidden to broadcast advertisements that foment violence, discrimination, racism, drug addiction, sexism, religious or political intolerance and all that undermines rights is forbidden.

Seems as though the media is pretty much already controlled by the state. They already shut down any intolerance toward them.
