And who pays for that "free" education ?

In the case of Bernie's plan to fund college education he has proposed a Robin Hood tax on Wall Street speculation.

I still dont think people realize how expensive it is to upkeep a world class university.

In a country as vast as the USA you would have to tax the city traders into outright bankruptcy to upkeep all you colleges and university at a quality level. As much as I would love to see those traders squirm I know enough about economics to know it would be devastating to the economy at large if you taxed them too much.

Fact is there should more focus at marking Science and engineering courses more available through free scholarships and letting the idiots that want the more useless degree pay for that themselves. Dpnt see why it up to the tax payer to fund some teenager that doesn't know what to do in life to party, drink have lots of sex and maybe turn up to some lectures in courses that will have little relevance to future job prospects just so they can "find themselves".

I say charge the art and other BS degree like crazy if you can then offer more places for the Science and engineering courses for free!

The future economy needs more scientists, doctors, nurses, mathematicians and engineers. What it doesn't need is Liberal art grads, more lawyers and people that have a pieces of paper saying they are good at painting pretty (or not so pretty ) pictures or women's studies majors.

In manpower you overwhelm any opponent...

In weaponry, missiles, and equipment numerically there is an advantage...
But the gulf in terms of efficiency is not so drastic.
Intelligence gathering is pretty much deadlocked...

Take into account two very recent wars and a fatigued military...
Cutting spending to those other integral parts could endanger the U.S.

Not to mention infowars...
Civil unrest at a tipping point also adds to the total aftermath.

Maybe a 10% cut could help...
Any more than that is playing with fire at this stage.

Atleast your not crazy charlie, America has to spend what they do because we pretty much
take care of the UK and Europe so they can have THEIR free college and healthcare,
someone has to protect all of you from china and russia.. I understand the European countries
having the extra money to spend on all this, until you get to greece who gets even TOO GREEDY
(socialist can be greedy too)

We dont HAVE free college in the UK.

We have to pay for it.

Plus we spend our agreed 2% on NATO.

Our economy would have been bigger and we could have spent more but it was YOU guys that told us to get rid of our empire and we did...... So dont whine now we had to cut back our armed forces.

Anyway we are quite safe from Russia even without the US. Even now the RN would make short work of any conventional attack. That if the Russian Navy doesn't sink on it own.

Yep. Robin Hood tax. Though you could bring school costs way down just by cutting military spending (aka subsidies for the MIC) a little.

Your talking bollcoks

The healthcare paid for out a separate budget.

And as I said if push came to shove the UK is safe even without the USA.

We have our own nuclear deterrent and our Royal Navy has among the best submarines and Destroyers in the world that would make very short work of the 1980's rust buckets the Russian Navy has.

Focus on the the European deadbeats not us.

Welcome to socialism and why i will not be voting for Bernie, were going to be taxed to hell..

Sure he's going to Robin Hood'' wallstreet, let's see how that works out..

Without a single helping hand nor progressive intuition to save you.

Outstanding rebuttal. Well thought out, brilliantly articulated. I'm impressed.

More of a pipedream than a rebuttal.

Let's just take solace in agreement that Bernie has all the attributes of a snake oil salesman.

yup, higher wages for people that do the actual work, rather than the tax breaks for billionaires that make money off of them....yup, pure snake oil....

Free college.

FREE COLLEGE?

It'll only be "free" if we simply surrender all our assets and let government dictate what we should have, eat, where we should live.

This should be a two way street, should it not? Lets provide low cost education that the Government subsidizes the student's obligations as long as the student maintain a 3.0 and the Government picks what area of higher learning is needed most.

All colleges become non-profit, and all professors/administrators reduce their pay below 15 bucks an hour. They are then provided dorm style housing, college uniforms, and communal eating hall.

I think we have a good direction here to provide all students with low cost/free education.

I would think that the crazy increase in educational costs has a lot to do with the bloated system running it. The pay is crazy for ten-year professors that is not even close to the crazy pay of "administrators". Add in they are "for profit" organizations and you get the picture of capitalists wolves hiding in the social liberal sheep's clothing. Lots of Cronyism going on here with no one telling them it is wrong...

At least with the military 1/3 of the cost is for sane incomes/needed benefits, so you can cut military spending but you might be surprised how little until you cut military benefits too, well unless that is your goal.

But nothing in life is free.

unless you want;
Professors to work with no salary
Dorms to be heated/cooled maintained for no costs
Food to be provided at no cost
Workers to supply support services at no costs
Books to be supplied at no costs
The makers of the books to work with no pay
School suppliers to work with no pay

I was thinking the same thing. My city couldn't even pay our University's football coach.
And that program brings in TONs of money.

How about not having over inflated cronyism salaries, and reduce the 20 administrators per professor that make much more....

Dorms to be heated/cooled maintained for no costs
Food to be provided at no cost

How about just non-profit, that is the middle and works for me to help reduce educational costs.

Workers to supply support services at no costs

Most of these are not a part of the Cronyism system and so I would bet their pay is reasonable, or even too low.

Books to be supplied at no costs
The makers of the books to work with no pay

At 300.00 per book with new additions every year with no substance change? There is a lot of wiggle room to reduce cost here lol

The bottom line is colleges are for profit companies and do extremely well in the profit area. Even if we reduced lets say 60k to 20k in educational cost then the cost would not be that much of an issue.

For those of us that actually paid for our educations (and our kids) can we get exempt from future educational taxes, or can we get my cost back in a tax credit...hehe
