Love the shots of the F-35A and F-22 flying together.

Is it the angle or is there a different HUD structure in the RAF variant compared to the Italian? Looks like a grab handle possibly for use when trying to use the MHDDs for ground acquisition? But I would imagine the slew is on the left hand so pointless?

Dot recall anything like that in the tiffies I worked on?

I had to zoom in on the original shot to get a clear view. When I did i could see that it is the inside edge of the opposite side of the canopy frame. Had me going though

Zaph a question for when you get round to reading this .. I've noticed in a lot of F35 pics/videos there always seems to be contrails (not sure the correct name) coming off the tips of the wings. Why is this ? Just curious .. Were they a concern when the aircraft was getting developed it kind of gives away as to where the aircraft is in the sky

Aerodynamic contrails. They're common in high humidity areas down low. Not really an issue as they're occurring when maneuvering, and at that point you're probably WVR anyway.

I have a question too. When I saw the F-35A at RIAT I noticed that there is a slight notch on top of the fuselage behind the canopy. What is this? And what is the F-35B 's equivalent?

Immediately behind the canopy or further back on the fuselage?

I think he means if you see from this angle it looks like there is a step in the fuse aroung where the lift fan door would be?

Might be wrong but I saw this and wondered. Is it the Air refuelling receptacle?

Yes. About mid way down the fuselage is the IFR receptacle.

Yes, its about where the refuelling recepticle is, but appears to be something facing backwards

Light for the receptacle for night refueling.

Is that what they say it is, or what it really is? Seems rather prominently sculpted in for a mere light?

Reminds of when I was at Brize Norton a few weeks ago, I pointed up at a lump on the Voyager KC.2 tanker and asked the pilot what it was for, there followed lots of 'er....ummm's and it wasn't cos he didn't know, lol.

That's actually a pretty lousy place to put sensors. The structure gets in the way of what they can see.

Depends where it's looking. I was imagining a passive warning sensor for the upper hemisphere.
