The year is 2015. Most people on this site I respect more than my closest friends and I have never met you.

Most of us here value knowing current events vs. keeping up with politics or mainstream BS, queue in jacking off emojis.

Anyone reading this is the part of the most substantial renaissance known to man. That being said argumentatively, the printing press or trading of goods and culture would be a popular protest to my statement. Most of us have in our pocket a device that with a thirst for knowledge and an understanding of how to question things will result in answers to your questions. Most of us here will say we are critical and hold ourselves to a different level than the "sheeple". That beings said I am curious and have a very important question.

We see ourselves as more informed yet the sheeple are still prevalent, I ask you how are we so ineffective? Those before us were far more influential, should this thread get a reaction I'm sure many responses will give viable examples. So why now with this influx of information can we not be articulate and persuasive enough to provide humanity with the lessons that have been set out before us? Before you answer I challenge you to think, an idea is the most powerful thing in existence in my opinion. An idea cannot be killed, nor eradicated , and with the right vehicle "person", an idea can infect the whole world faster than a virus. Should anyone of us truly believe what we exude, in many cases very similar to one another, challenge the status quot. I wounder why we can admire one another quietly like hermits yet cannot convince the populous like it has been done in more "archaic" times with far less resources than we have today. I call on us all to challenge each other, realize the renaissance in which we live, and hone our skills to create a culture that is a democracy. That we all take responsibility in governing ourselves in a sense where there is accountability, accountability to ourselves and our peers. I wish I could put all this more eloquently, but I hope someone will read this and wounder why with our minds we cannot demand progress from where we stand.

If we believe in progress why can we believe people in a far earlier time with far less resources changed the world with words and ideas yet now it cannot be done, than I suppose we truly do have no hope.

What has changed?

God was taken out of the picture.

Everyone thinks THEY are gods now.

How is that working out?

You're mainstream if you wrote this thread!

-M. Night

If you can glean anything from this site it will be that no one cares about your opinion unless it somehow remotely agrees/vehemently disagrees with their own opinion.

The only God I can think of in that remark is God I wish he would speak towards humans not acting or being convicted in their beliefs. I do not hate in religion, but if your idea of religion is "Jesus take the wheel" your God is not proud. Grow a pair and be convicted in your thoughts.

I don't typically try to rip on people but wow, hoe closed minded are you? If you had a type A personality you would admire who challenged you as you think you rip them apart. I love any idea that has conviction and logic, shame on you for thinking everyone here seeks agreement. If you want that go to a public school, I assure you you'll get the pat on your ass you so desperately seek.

You're....

You can't lead sheep who's primary sensory glands have been glazed over by years and years of mainstream hypnotizing.

If you yell loud enough eventually those who do the glazing will come for you. That is a fact I know all too well.

Says everyone since the beginning of time. Give me a break, humanity has been in far worse psychological times and with far less hope and resources certain men prevailed and we experienced a better future. But that was all part of the plan right?
don't worry, the doom porn here will help keep your struggling boner, God forbid we try with the knowledge we have. Pecimism is for the weak, don't try to act like your on a high horse or some intellect with that rhetoric.

God was in the picture and on the minds of everyone for thousands of years and things worked no better then than they do now. In fact those eons of God being in the picture has led us here so maybe you should complain about that if you have such a problem with where we are now.

Those who currently continue to have God in the picture are doing more fighting killing than anyone over it as well. Either against those who have no God or those who have a different God. So I fail to see the benefit of it personally. I also fail to see the validity of it and unless God wants to clear up all the trouble being caused in it's name personally and for all to witness I don't think there is any point in continuing to argue over it. Clearly by now we should have come to some common ground but we haven't so aside from the almighty himself/herself showing up to lend a hand we may as well put such things on hold and move on.

BTW, I don't think people think they are Gods at all. Some people hardly think of themselves or others as people most of the time even. Those who do think of themselves as Gods obviously haven't tested the theory or don't have a very high bar set for what makes a God.

Plenty of miraculous and amazing advancements are occurring everyday. People are fighting and winning for good all over the globe, taking place over the whole spectrum of people and all scales, from everyday 1 on 1 encounters to society level breakthroughs. You just can't expect to find it on the front page, because good news doesn't sell.

But if you want to be cynical, our society fails us because we have failed our society.

I am a Sheeple, however I look beyond the walls of my confine and wonder 'Why' and 'What If'

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think it is a definable quality of life to look beyond the confines...even if they are comfortable.

It's the confines that limit us, that corral us, it is the bonds that tie us that we cannot live without. Slaves in a free world.

When you have stumbled upon something simple and extraordinary which contradicts most of what you were taught in higher education. Such things shouldn't be possible.

However what you will find is that there are people who's life missions are to keep things exactly the way they are for their short term gain.

How is your family? Because thats who they will come after first if you make yourself inaccessible.

Because it's easier to simply do what everyone else does than it is to dare to be different. Being different, doing something different makes a person uncomfortable.

Look at how people perceive Fox News, for example. You have many media outlets, and they all report the same news in the same way. The only way thing that is different is in which talking head gives you the same canned story. Along comes Fox, and it still gives you the same story, but it adds a slightly different spin. All of a sudden, people can't handle it and will froth over in rage as though it's the worst thing ever.

Why? Does it actually lie, or is it because it dares to be different, ever so slightly, from the rest because if you really watch the actual news portions, the stories are the same ones the other guys give you - CNN and the rest. And Fox has an audience who think they are being subversive and getting the real news which is really just the same news with a slightly different filter.

So I repeat, no one likes to be different. It makes them uncomfortable.

One thing is certain...

Spending a lot of time with a mouse in your hand, posting on banal and silly threads via the www. will shake the Earth to it's very foundation and make life changing impacts on the sheeple.

We should be very proud of ourselves!!!

Stinker...

Where to even begin...

We, as a collective, have an obligation to one another. We are bound by common cause, despite the fact that we disagree on a great range of topics, and so we should. It is discourse and debate which drive our conduct on this site, and these in turn further our understanding of the world, or at least, CAN further our understanding. We must accept that, inevitably, there will be members amongst our number who are here to deliver their outlook, without changing it as new data becomes available.

In this way, we are no different to any other collective of thinking people with a forum for debate.

You have to understand, there are thousands, perhaps millions of places, some of them in the physical world, and others hewn from edifices of data such as this one, where a person might go to discuss the matters of the day, or ruminate on matters long past with others who share an interest. I do not doubt that our community has some of the most diverse and vibrant, not to mention some of the most capable debaters and commentators anywhere on the face of Earth, for I have seen evidence of it. We have researchers and subject matter experts the envy of other collectives of the sort on the web, and we are the biggest too.

But here, I believe, is the crux of the issue. Our voices are not one, because we are not a political bloc, but a group of people having a discussion. We reach few conclusions as a group, because we reach many conclusions as individuals, and our individual conclusions do not form a cohesive whole on enough occasions that they form a political doctrine, a unified message to give to the world for its betterment. We are right and left, black and white, both on the radar, and skimming the wave tops to avoid it. We are in society, and outside of it, because unlike other collectives, we are a collective of pure diversity. We are not any one thing, but many, perhaps even all things, at times.

Without a unified message to bring to the world, without a consensus, all we have is the discussion, aside from the mutual respect that debating with the finest collection of independent thinkers I have ever come across, tends to inspire between people of differing views and experience. This has value in and of itself, but does not constitute a world changing, paradigm shattering, solidified message which has the power to inspire the entire mass of humanity.

If we were a membership not of hundreds of thousands, but of billions, then we might be able to say otherwise, but as it stands today, we have only our ability to debate without automatically hating our opposite number in discussion, to mark us apart from the rest of the teeming mass of humankind.

There is certainly something to be said for your sarcasm, olaru. Well put.

At the same time...In a civilization that is consistently being re-shaped by social engineering and dialectical processes, what we do here has importance, in the challenging and re-defining of our perceptions of the world around us. While our niche may be small, it is the seed that sprouts, and could indeed become a liberty tree, in its own right. "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one..."

this tell it quite neatly. Its not necessarily the fear that they will come to silence me; but that my shouts would have been in vain anyway because the 90% who walk around asleep are only on alert when their weekly alcohol or other drug of choice is priced beyond their reach. Who or what are we trying to wake up?

And by the way from the many threads and my own research CriticalStinker idea (culture that is a democracy) that democracy is the ideal political state, needs to be further explored.
