A recent poll in Japan has expressed the desire for their government to take a tougher stance on China and North Korea. Several events between Japan and the two countries have increased the public ire towards the two states. China most recently had on of its submarines caught in Japanese waters, and North Korea continues its saber rattling as nuclear negations remain bogged down.

TOKYO (AFP) - A majority of Japanese want their government to get tougher with China and North Korea as support for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has dipped, an opinion poll showed.

Tension has been mounting between Japan and its communist neighbors amid a row over North Korea's abductions of Japanese citizens and a string of disputes with China.

The poll of 1,740 people by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun found 54 percent did not approve of the government's China policy, nearly double the 28 percent who supported it.

Forty-eight percent favored Koizumi's visits to a controversial war shrine in Tokyo, against 38 percent who were opposed, the economic daily said.

This jives with a post I made last week charting the increases in offensive capacity the Japanese government was considering. They seem to be moving away from a purely defensive capacity to a military that is able to project power away from its shores. Much of this may be aimed at these two countries.

Ok, the Japanese do not want a offensive stand... They are being forced by the US to change their strategy. Armistace said a few months ago that the Japanese Constitutions article on peace is hindering US / Japanese relations. Koizumi is in love with Bush and will do anything to follow what the US wants him to do. That is why he is taking a beating in the polls. He is not popular, because he is seen as a pawn by the US.

Now, Japanese are upset as many Japanese have been abducted by North Korea. North Korea refuses to cooperate. They turned over 4 people or so. They said the rest died. They turned over the bones of one person and DNA proved it to be a lie. Of course the people want a tougher stance on North Korea. How would the US like it if Mexico was abducting US citizens. Of course we could want a tougher stance.

This is not moving away, but North Korea only wasnt stuff for doing nothing. South Korea gets all the benefits, so of course they want a lighter stance. It all depends on each nation. The US is too screwed up in Iraq to really care about this issue. Although North Korea having Nuclear weapons is a MUCH BIGGER problem than the chemical weapons never found in Iraq.
