I'm simply being tongue in cheek. It's all just superficial tripe. It fixes nothing. It certainly doesn't offset the deaths of nine people or cure our social ills or centuries of transgressions. It's a placating. It's politicizing.

Perhaps its placating. But whats wrong with that?

Tell these families

When they see this:

That it is 'superficial tripe' removing the flag that the murderer of their families held to his chest.

I wonder if we could apply all this rhetoric and vitriol to getting rid of the IRS?

The Norths role in slavery in the civil war is not what's important to the debate, no one denies the Union was just as bad, this isn't about good guy North vs bad guy South. The debate is about flying a flag that embraced the notion of white supremacy.

What's been solved?

Whether or not to fly a flag of traitorous hatred.

What's been corrected?

Not flying a flag of traitorous hatred.

What wrongs have been righted?

A civil right to not have to look at a flag of traitorous hatred every time they go to a government building.

Why this hurts people is bizarre. It's a move worthy of a cold one. Or a double.

It's definitely a flag of rebellion.

We really should never have any symbols that remind us of that.

The ironic thing is that the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to recognize the actual flag of the confederacy without googling.

if the goal was removing it from one place should fix everything, I'm afraid this was a huge failure.

Again with this argument?????? who the hell is saying it is going to fix anything? and that racism is now gone. The flag going down wasn't a symbol of racism is dead now and everything has changed, It was voted to go down as it went up in response to civil rights movement and that is disgraceful. Now its gone, we can CONTINUE on working towards fixing things.
It is a process in the works for decades, and no one I know has said its now fixed or changed everything for the better, let the process continue.

I do feel better. I don't care that it will be more on display on private property freedom of speech is a fantastic thing. I care that a symbol of inequality, flown in protest of civil rights isn't being flown by a government anymore.

Your own Stars and Stripes already symbolises rebellion.

Or does that somehow mean so little nowadays you all need a throwback to your own enemies?

Fly a Union Jack while your at it.

Might as well.

Only because we wouldn't want to offend you.

Taking the flag down has nothing to with Abraham Lincoln or the Union. This is why I say your argument is disjointed.

All the detractors are going to keep saying it.

I made a thread about it, not many of them turned up to discuss it.

Only Beezzer gave a coherent argument as to why the debate heads in that direction.

lol flying it would offend me.

I'm Scots-Irish...
The Union Jack does not represent me or my ancestors whose graves the Royal palaces are built upon.

Back on topic, I hope you see my point.
Despite your humourous rebuttal.

It has everything to do with segregation, racism and white supremacy right?

sigh..again
Lincoln was for all of that

Yes Lincoln was for all of those horrible things, slavery, segregation, white supremacy... what does that have to do with South Carolina flying a flag that embraces those things also and the fact that it came down today? What is your point with North vs South, Lincoln VS Davis?

Why does it matter what Lincoln wanted...
It should only matter what the righteous wanted, and that was freedom & more rights for the people held in slavery.

I don't remember hearing about Lincoln being on the frontline of battle.
