If we ask some simple questions can we know this truth?

What was marriage set up for ?

What is the purpose of marriage?

Why was it established?

And who established marriage in the first place?

What is marriage for?

If you're a woman - To wear a fancy dress and pretend you are a 17th Century Princess

Man...So that you can get that woman off the market so other men don't steal her away. Property Rights.

Man/Man - Woman/Woman - To say F. society

OK, that was in jest, but if you want the real answers Wiki has a pretty good write-up.

I could spend a lot of time explaining the social-economic history of marriage, but I think Meatloaf explains HOW marriage came about pretty well.

[Girl:]
Stop right there
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further

Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life?
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife?

Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life?
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife?

I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?

[Boy:]
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby, let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby, let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby, let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

[Girl:]
I gotta know right now
Do you love me?

For the rest of my life?
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
And will you love me forever?

What's it gonna be, boy?
Come on, I can wait all night.
What's it gonna be, boy?
Yes or no?
What's it gonna be, boy?
Yes or no?

[Boy:]
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby, let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it

[Boy:]
I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god
And on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore I would love you to the end of time

It's for dummies!

I suppose the right answer is it's a union of two souls, so sex isn't such a "sin". Who knows.
No idea who thought it up. I'll wager a guess it came from the Bible.

Doesn't mean anything anymore these days, other than to prove ownership of one another.

I am pretty sure marriage is not ownership. I have been happily married 18 years.

One cannot own another person. I do not even own my dogs. I am my husband's life partner, and legally married, and I am guardians to my critters. I own nothing. Even the clothing I wear is temporary to me.

I don't want to "own".

We humans do love our silly hats and ceremonies. Marriage is but one of these 'silly' ceremonies and it is deeply ingrained into the human psyche

What is the purpose of marriage?

To formalise a bond between two human adults in their community

Why was it established?

Because girls (and boys) love bling and having a day that is 'all about ME'

And who established marriage in the first place?

Given that most cultures have a ceremony of some sort, I'd say it was just an idea that we collectively had as the human race i.e no one single person created it.

[quote
What is marriage for?

For the simple purpose of making a lifelong and very public promise to spend the rest of your days with someone you supposedly love.

Depends on the type of marriage you're talking about.

Inbreeding?
Inter Tribal relations?
Outer Tribal relations?
Familial networking?
Convenience?
Arranged?

Or a bond of Love?

Each will generate different answers.

it all begins in esoteric/symbolic ritual to increase the "magick" that the creator has used to join man and woman to make child.

Its all based in man/woman/child. 3 is an important number for a reason.
all the stuff you hear th religious discuss is simply "profane knowledge" meant for dissemination amongst the uninitiated.

So divorce lawyers can make truckloads of money from the misery & destruction of the "relationship" (usually centralized around traumatizing kids in the process) thanks in large part to the mainly western idiocratic society accounting for Hollyweird saying if you like it you should put a ring on it and if you don't then Cause you had your turn, and now you gonna learn...What it really feels like to miss me.

Others do it for love, still others to suit dynastic bloodlines.

Inheritance. Rules and laws to say who gets your stuff when you die. Kinda still applies today. To change the underlying structure of such laws, you must have a legal document, a will.

*Marriage* is the final commitment in any relationship it states, 'I've

finally found *the one* I've been looking for!'

Until such time couples who state "we don't need marriage or a piece

of paper to validate our relationship" are on the look out for a better

deal?

How often has it happened to in short/long term *relationships* that

one of them has gone off and *married* another?

Lyrics from a Billie Jo Spiers.song >>>>

I don't believe you love me as much as you let on
But since you feel you owe me you keep holding on
You'll carry me to any lengths just to prove you have the strength
And you'll hold me ... till something better comes along ...

And then you'll leave me you wont even care
how I feel when I awake and you're not there
So I'll just live and love you one day at a time
And until something better comes along, you're mine ....................

most of your replies reflect current culture and not the past cultures.

We cannot use wikipedia because any views or understanding.

may responses are silly and irrelevant.

We need to move past and do some deeper research into the subject.
