I think CNN deliberately missed the mark. They mentioned the secondary effects, but not the root cause.
Sure, companies bribe politicians to pass laws to increase company profits. That's probably been going on since the birth of the nation. Bribery is
all about paying the target enough to overcome any ethical dilemma. So we can assume a rise in such bribery that either the ethical standards have
become much lower, or the cash available for the bribes is much higher. Maybe both.
You'll note the CNN graph goes 1979 to 2011. Even if you assume that lawmakers have become less ethical, I think we need to recognize that the cash
available for the bribes has shot up quite a bit. So the question becomes, where did all this money come from? Hint: the key dates are 1971 and
1978.
