" Sweden's top military commander says Russian fighter pilots are behaving in an increasingly aggressive manner in northern Europe, flying dangerously close to Swedish Air Force jets and in some cases even releasing flares at them.

Supreme Commander Sverker Goransson told a seminar on the Swedish island of Gotland on Monday that the Russians are breaking the normal rules of conduct for when military aircraft meet in the air.

He said examples include Russian planes breaking formation, flying at unsafe distances and using "countermeasures" that "nearly bounce off the metal" of the Swedish aircraft.

The Swedish military on Tuesday confirmed he was talking about decoy flares designed to divert incoming missiles.

Swedish military chief says Russian jets released flares

So the Russians are amping it up a bit here. I still see it as just flexing, but why would they do this? firing flares at Swedish fighter jets? What possible good is that going to do for relations here? Is this just another "flexercise" for Putin, or is this really pushing for someone to react?

What is the guideline for firing flares anyways? Seems like a "loophole" for them to use in order to show they would fire on them if they could.

I wonder if Russia is just letting people know that there will be repercussions to Nato's buildup on Russia's borders. This may be a method to let the Sweeds know that they will be touchable if other Nato countries make foolish actions against Russia. Just my speculation….

They're doing this stuff to the Swedish because the Russians know they won't do anything. I'd be interested to see if they would fire flares at US, British, or Israeli jets.

I am getting pissed off with this neo cold war tit for tat BS.
It's not going to end well if things keep heading in this direction.

Why Europe, the US and Russia are doing this when we ALL face a real threat from the ISIS subhumans is beyond me.
We need to be sticking together not skirmishing with one another in these dangerous times.

The leaders need their heads knocking together IMO.

Sweden is not in NATO it is a neutral country. At least it was until Russia started screwing with it. Just like Finland Russia thinks threats will get these non NATO states to bow to Russia's wishes but, all it has done is drive two states that were neutral through the Cold War, and for Sweden much longer, and drive them into NATO arms. Russia has the diplomatic skills of a large ape with a club. I am guessing anybody with a lick on sense in their foriegn office was run off long ago.

You don't "fire" flares, you dispense them or eject them.

Its not dangerous providing the intercepting plane isn't really close. I'd say it was more of a prank, or possibly a test to see what countermeasures might be used.

And this is interesting...

Putin pointed out that there will be consequences, that Russia will have to resort to a response of a military kind and reorientate our troops and missiles. The country that joins NATO needs to be aware of the risks it is exposing itself to,” Tatarintsev told Dagens Nyheter. However, such a response would not take the immediate form of an attack, since "Sweden is not a target for our armed troops," Tatarintsev added.

I find it amazing that Putin has the balls to threaten military action because Sweden is discussing joining NATO. If Sweden was on the fence that statement alone would push them closer to NATO than they ever were before.

Need to install that Boeing directed EMP weapon on some Swedish aircraft and silently shut the Russian jets off lol.

Putin seems to have no understanding of anything outside of Russia. NATO already has 28 members plus 5 more Georgia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo who wall are trying to join. Why would he want to add Finland and Sweden who were happy to sit on the side lines to his long list of enemies. Threats work in Russia because people fear Putin, threats do not work outside of Russia because they do not fear Putin.

The story it self isn't new, it just made the news since ÖB (the Supreme Commander) spoke at Almedalen (a park in the Swedish city of Visby on the island of Gotland) at the yearly political week. The Russians like to come and check us out now and then, I think it was 7-8 times thus far this year. There has also been some "incidents" out on the Baltic Sea involving Russian warships and and mainly civilian Swedish and Finish ships, that the Russians wanted to take "a closer look at".

@MrSpad.
Yup, we're still neutral, but the more the Russians keep doing what they're doing, the louder some politicians scream that we shall join NATO.

They (the Russians) usually fly with the Transponder (or what the heck that thing is Airplanes have is called) so perhaps technically it isn't a airplane our MIGHTY (keeping a straight face here) Air Force would shoot down?

Besides, Soviet shot down two of our's in the 1950's

Maybe the Ruskies think they will dilute NATO and spread them thin in the short term with so many new nations clamoring for protection. They are about to make more aggressive land grabs. He already got a free land grab in Crimea and basically half of Ukraine is his for the taking.

Unfriendly Reminders

The problem with these sorts of antics is that they serve only to inspire targeted nations to beef up their defense spending and consider strengthening their ties to non-Russian countries, perhaps even joining NATO.

It's hard to see how that benefits Russia.

Well in the cases of most of these states Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Montenegro they are safely surrounded by NATO states and although none of the bring much to the table military wise they also would not require any protection from NATO itself.

With Sweden and Finland we are not talking about to two small weak states. They may not be great powers but, certainly bring something to the NATO table. Both have modern forces and both can call out a good amount of reserves. That is another million men for Russia to worry about when they are already out numbered by a great deal. Plus NATO using Swedish and Finnish naval and air bases just makes things worse for Russia not to mention that Finnish border that would now become a real danger to Russia if the Fins were joined by Swedish and Nord forced plus some US Marines.

Russia's strategic positioned is only weakened and NATOs only made stronger by the addition of those two states. I think Putin looks at Finland and Sweden as weak nations who's people live the good lives and that they would just role over to Russian threats and so whatever Russia tells them to. This is a mistake often made when dealing with the West. Just because our lives are good it is assumed we are soft. When the truth is, war is where the West truly excels.

True, but a million reserves that are bottled up in pincers on day one is only another million to march off to the gulags after having zero impact.
