The fact that it's damn near the only thing out there that can see certain weapons coming.

That is a fair point
However I'd redirect you in the direction of $$$
That's the long and short of it my friend
We paid up front for a golden goose and paid some more but got a lame duck instead....sorry, will eventually get a lame duck
I still giggle to myself remembering, while at lakenheath, the future capability briefing and presentation how the point they kept going on about "dominating the airspace with gen 5 aircraft without contenders for the next 25 years
3 weeks later Russia officially rolled theirs out, due to enter service next year if I recall
Not bigging up that airframe ...don't know too much about it yet
You all make me feel bad .......sorry

The T-50 is more of a 4++ than 5th Gen and has its own problems. Like right now they slashed the initial order to 12, and there's no telling if they'll get more. The main engine won't even be ready for production until 2020, and others.

Again, much the same was said about the Osprey. And that took three decades to see service.

Annnnnnd now we're here.

Typhoon, an updated version of the Hornet, F-35, or Gripen are considered the main contenders.

don't feel bad. you're just putting your experience out there. I disagree on your final assessment but it doesn't make you the bringer of rain for all parades. I think this thing is on the upper crust of Gen5. Only time proves someone right.

Yeah .... You think the f35 will be relevent in 30 years?
A shed load of cash has gone upfront on these ....how long has it been already I know some certain systems were never intended to be online by now but for every success there's 3 new problems

They did, but it was spread out over many programs. They got a few things that hurt from the F-35 though.

Most of the current problems are on their way to being resolved. There aren't any truly major Oh my god problems really left.

The A-10 sucks in air-to-air engagements too, but it's a hell of a machine when it's doing its actual mission.

That's what top cover is for.

Ya it goes low and slow.

Then it hits like freight train at full speed.

It is a giant cannon with wings.

I could talk about that and the "BUFF" for days and never get bored.

I deeply respect your obvious knowlege, insights and connections Zaphod I always have
But that's been the downfall of many a program, a few little faults a few compromises a few issues you can work around in the right places changes the whole outcome
10/20/30 years later the the tech catches up with the dream
I really hoped for this aircraft, I saw it as the only true gen 5, we have the tech for every aspect, what we lack is the tech to get it to work together a reply to: Zaphod58

Well the Tomcat made it over 30 years. The Hornet has made it 30 years and still going. The 'Hog is nearing 40 years. With the way technology is advancing, who knows for sure. But to answer the question: probably, yea.

Kinda appears you just want to slate the program on principle or something. Like its offended you on a personal level somehow, some way?

Whatever. People screamed and shook their fists at the Osprey for 30 years and now it's delivering on the promises.
