Good news for Cubans.
An oil deposit containing up to 100 million barrels of oil has been discovered off the coast of Santa Cruz del Norte, east of Havana.
Cuba currently consumes about 150,000 barrels of oil per day.
About half of that is imported.
With this new discovery, which could start production in 2006, they will be able to reduce imports a bit.
They say there could be large quantities of oil in Cuba's waters in the Gulf of Mexico.
Perhaps there's a chance that one day, Cuba can eliminate oil imports entirely or even become an exporter.
Newsday
