According to NASA, the quake moved the North pole and also made our days shorter...

The "mean North pole" was shifted by about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) in the direction of 145 degrees East Latitude. This shift east is continuing a long-term seismic trend identified in previous studies.

They also found the earthquake decreased the length of day by 2.68 microseconds. Physically this is like a spinning skater drawing arms closer to the body resulting in a faster spin. The quake also affected the Earth's shape. They found Earth's oblateness (flattening on the top and bulging at the equator) decreased by a small amount. It decreased about one part in 10 billion, continuing the trend of earthquakes making Earth less oblate.

I found this story today....thought it was kind of neat..
but well, unsure if it was worthy of it's own thread.

It seems that all the members of one tribe survived the tsunami because they knew that the "evil spirits" we about to come after them.

"HUT BAY, India - When the water in the creek suddenly ran out to sea on the morning of Dec. 26, the aboriginal Onge tribe knew the evil spirits were up to no good.


They scattered pig and turtle skulls around their settlement and hurled stones toward the ocean. Hurriedly gathering their baskets, bows and arrows, they then fled into the jungle, bearing amulets of ancestral bones for protection.


Minutes later, the tsunami that left nearly 300,000 people dead or missing in the Indian Ocean region slammed into their tribal reserve in India's remote Andaman islands. All 96 Onge survived, even as residents of the nearby town of Hut Bay perished. "

hmmmm. seems like maybe these primitive tribes could teach us a few things, doesn't it?

Ok you dont have a full story. The angle of the island to tsunami could have made all the difference in the world, but they left that out. The people were hunters not fishers tells me something. Ya gotta think about what you read. Maybe that would help.

Well, I've just arrived back from surveying the damage done in part of Aceh
Province from the December 26, 2004 tsunami. Words are inadequate to
express the level of devastation witnessed. The only thing comparable is
pictures I've seen of Hiroshima following the dropping of the atomic bomb in
1945!

Even now, 2 1/2 months following the tsunami, 200-300 bodies each day are
being removed from collapsed buildings. No one really knows with any
accuracy what the final death toll in Indonesia will be, but some unofficial
estimates are suggesting that it could be as high as 300,000 - 400,000.
