No, 55 killed and 761 missing. I will edit to make that clearer.

I think (hope) he meant 55 dead, 761(?) missing. That's probably the case, but the death tolls will not be reliable for days. And what about the few hours worth of waves?

This is a big event, it is perhaps the biggest earthquake recorded (i dont know if this is true, i am possibly wrong here), we(the human race) are lucky it didnt happen under a densly populated city.

my condolences to the countries whose citizens are effected and to the families that have been effected.

Keep those numbers coming Indigo, good work! ::Applause::

I read an article this week in Discover magazine that the ocean floor around Indonesia subducts water at an enormous rate. Is this why oil companies maintain the practice of filling their wells with salt water? I wonder if the natural mechanisms have been disrupted in some way..

I know for a fact that salt water does not substitute for oil in a car engine, wouldn't the same hold true for the engine of our planet? I mean, the oil acts as a sort of lubricant between plates doesn't it?

Yes, I also think our drilling into the ocean/ground for oil has contributed to the increase in earthquakes. I think this is only a tip of an ice berg of something much more catastrophic to unfold in due course. If my theory is correct the eruption of St Helens will be a factor.

Mount St. Helens is Little Sister right? Ranier is Grandfather? The little sister speaks and grandfather answers, and the land is swept clear to the ocean..

How will this tectonic instability affect the canary islands? I think they've got a volcano there about to dump a HUGE chunk of rock into the ocean. This could be just the sort of thing to show South Americans what 300 foot waves look like up close and personal. Also, I wouldn't want to be in New York, or Miami for that matter.

I've been watching the Canary Islands and wishing for some news, but like all interesting stories, it was wiped from the news after a couple days last month. I'm getting increasingly frustrated by 'legitimate sources' which seem less legitimate and more contrived daily.

I can't really comment. I am not a geologist. But I can say that St Helens and Mt Rainer erupting will spell disaster for the Americas.

There was someone recently who predicted a Tsunami hitting America recently. It seems likely now.

UPDATE: Total death toll exceeds 2000 with 1000 confirmed dead in India

Total reported death toll: 2272 and rising

If the reading of 8.9 holds true after the plentiful investigations that will come in from centers around the world, this will rank as the fifth most powerful in 104 years.

1. Chile 1960 05 22 9.5 38.24 S 73.05 W
2. Prince William Sound, Alaska 1964 03 28 9.2 61.02 N 147.65 W
3. Andreanof Islands, Alaska 1957 03 09 9.1 51.56 N 175.39 W
4. Kamchatka 1952 11 04 9.0 52.76 N 160.06 E

It seems that the tidal waves are actually causing significantly more casualties than the quake itself did.

Those numbers are going up fast..

Could this continue to endanger people in the next 48-72 hours? I think it will take time for tsunamis to make their way across the sea floor, no? USGS isn't reporting any new quakes, and I haven't been able to find tables for computing tsunami speed based on earthquake magnitude, so I'm not sure what the situation is, how long the alert will last basically.
