BBC World is the only station with coverage in my area right now.

The Maldives are largely under water...

Waves as high as ten meters reported in some areas...

The further from the epicentre an area is, the higher the waves and the greater the damage...

Coastal water receading very far exposing at least a half mile of ocean floor after the wave and returning to normal with repeated batering of the coast...

Water washing into the third floor of some buildings...

Death toll expected to climb throughout the day...

All the seismos are black.
That should tell you the scope of this quake.

It occurs to me that all that friction is going to increase the amount of lava present beneath the crust, right? And when that happens, pressure increases, and traditional 'spout' volcanos blow. And when they blow, it can relieve so much pressure, the caps of a supervolcano or two could sink and cosqequently erupt. It could happen. I'd say we're at a 50/50 for today and tommorow. If you start to see a number of small eruptions, we could be going for the big ride.

Yeah, will these quakes also trigger a chain of events in the western hemisphere? Are there are qualified geologists here to comment?
Just a few weeks ago all the volcanos became active in the ring of fire, there are no reports of them erupting, but if this is the state of things at this point, I wonder what will happen when they erupt.

Screw TV, is there a good online, up to date source? Where were you getting your earlier numbers Indigo? There are probably several different 'official' sets of numbers at this early stage right?
I've got my helmet on just in case, but I noticed the seismo for North Dakota is clean as a whistle. How fast do the shockwaves from an 8.9 travel through the crust?

Ummm, you're reading one of the best online sources for it, actually.

This isn't going to set off a massive worldwide apocalyptic chain reaction, folks.
We had a 9.2 in 1964 that didn't bring the end of the world, and we had a 9.5 in 1960. Those are the two biggest quakes ever recorded, and they happened within 4 years of each other.
No crazy volcano spoutings, no caldera-go-boom.... there were many people who died and tremendous damage, but we're going to be fine.

Nerdling, you cannot say this is not the "apolcapyse" I understand you don't want there to be panic, but it would be highly ignorant to dismiss the severity of what has just transpired and also considering that this kind of climatic change has been foretold. We should take it seriously.

Isn't US within the ring of fire too? And aren't Rainer and Helens active, and at least in the case of Helens, an eruption is eminent.

UPATE: 406 killed in Sri Lanka. Eyewitnesses say water level rising.

Is grinning ear to ear and smoking like a bastard panicking? I'm gonna say no, for my dignity's sake. But seriously, I don't see people poking their eyes out or leaping out of buildings over this thing yet. Are they? I think it should be clear over the next two days whether this will translate into a bigger problem, but up to date information is precious for those of us who don't sleep.
