My theory. People who perpetrate this kind of crime are mentally ill. There was a time when mentally ill people were more commonly institutionalized (you know, before this type of thing happened on a regular basis). Today, however, due to many abuses that took place in said institutions they have all been closed except for those run by the criminal justice system. So basically there are no long term residential services for people with high risk for violent behavior until after they have committed a heinous crime. Medications may work for some if not most people, but basically when medication fails there is no plan b these days. So instead of being safely kept in some kind of secure long term residential facility, these people are roaming our neighborhoods where they have access to firearms, cutlery and innocent bystanders which is a recipe for disaster as we keep seeing repeatedly on the news.

Agreed, it was a two tier health system, Psychiatric hospitals, and General hospitals . They have deleted the psychiatric ones, and substituted it for pills sold by big Pharma. In a lifetime, a high proportion of the population have an emotional psychiatric episode, usually a one off. Which would have required a stay of about three months, in an institution, and then would never occur again. The stress levels have increased exponentially, and would require a massive health budget to repeat the Psychiatric hospital scenario. So basically, its a second best health system . That would require stress levels to go back to the fifties or sixties levels. Which in reality are happiness levels. We are a society steadily going nuts.

I hate to ask people to come out, but has any member here on ATS been on listed drugs and had radical change in behavior?

the discussion was not really dealing with drug addiction, and the types of illegal drugs people get addicted to in these cases. but the prescription drugs people are put on by doctors to control moods, and to "fix" things like depression. the type of drugs some people call "zombie drugs", because the person becomes pretty much a smiling zombie with no real control of their actions.
