The Constitution of the United States, in its fourth Article, provides as follows: "No person held to service or labor in one State, under the laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labor, but shall be delivered up, on claim of the party to whom such service or labor may be due." [editor's note: this is the Fugitive Slave Clause in the original Constitution whereby the North promised to return escaped slaves to their "owners" in the South]
The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery. They have endeavored to weaken our security, to disturb our domestic peace and tranquility, and persistently refused to comply with their express constitutional obligations to us in reference to that property, and by the use of their power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic.
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization
In all the non-slave-holding States, in violation of that good faith and comity which should exist between entirely distinct nations, the people have formed themselves into a great sectional party, now strong enough in numbers to control the affairs of each of those States, based upon an unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States and their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery, proclaiming the debasing doctrine of equality of all men, irrespective of race or color-- a doctrine at war with nature, in opposition to the experience of mankind, and in violation of the plainest revelations of Divine Law. They demand the abolition of negro slavery throughout the confederacy, the recognition of political equality between the white and negro races, and avow their determination to press on their crusade against us, so long as a negro slave remains in these States.

I would agree, except you and the commentator are forgetting one thing, which is the reason behind it's creation as explained above, that it is a symbol of White Supremacy as stated by the person that created that flag, there is just no getting around that, the Stars and Stripes can be misused as pointed out by others, but that was not the intent behind it's creation two very different things, one would not hoist a Nazi flag in front or on top of any state capitol we went to war with the Nazis just as we went to war with the breakaway states intent on not just keeping slave but expanding it, I don't think this will solve the issue of racism btw but symbolism does matter, what a private citizen can do and the state or local government can do are different things. As I said earlier every person who is offended by that flag should stop paying taxes as long as that blatant symbol of white supremacy flutters high over their heads.
PSA, pls reconsider chewing and smoking both are cancer causing and disgusting habits..

I understand. The point i'm trying to make is, you can CHOOSE to be offended by a flag, you can embody it in some shape or form, or just not care. In my case, I embody it as a form of rights. Get the fu*k outta here talking about slavery. 99.9% do not condone slavery. The powers that be are using this to separate us even more.
Either we come together as one, or we fall as one.
I know dipping/ smoking is disgusting to others. I take a step back when engaging in conversations. I know my breath is fowl.

Hey perhaps you should address the above to those who are hell bent on reliving the past, that's what the fuss is about after all, those who can't let go of a dead state , an idea and a past that should be well put to rest, the onus is on them to get over it.

You guys are misconstruing the meaning of the Stars and Stripes with that of the Confederate flag, the two are not mirror images of each other in meaning or intent, see my post a pg or two back about the origins and meaning of the Confederate flag by the man who created it, it was created as a symbol of "White Supremacy" W.T. Thompson. Thompson was delighted to have his design adopted by the Confederacy, claiming that it symbolized the “superior race.”
The flag of the United States Of America was constructed as a symbol that binds a nation together.
The below is not directed at you guys above.
Then there is the nonsense often repeated ad infinitum that Slavery wasn't the cause of the civil war.

Where does it state that the FLAG means RACISM or SLAVERY though?
What part of the flag represents the Confederacy is too hard for you to understand?
The ALABAMA battle flag IS NOT the CONFEDERATE FLAG. The CONFED flag has a HUGE white part. THAT is the one Specifically designed for the RACIST thought. The ALABAMA flag does not. The 13 stars are for the 13 colonies, the bars are to say cross us out of your union. It dont STATE SLAVERY ANYWHERE IN IT. Actually learn about th e subject instead of just jumping in to bash southerners or americans any chance you get.
ALso ITS NOT FLYING ON THE STATEHOUSE ANYMORE. Its on a War memorial. LEts remove all flags from all war memorials then right?
