Agreed , so it's like those five percent junk DNA that's the destructive part of our society...

I don't know if we're on the brink of extinction or not, but it's become chic to glibly and ironically proclaim "humans are a plague", and "humans are killing the earth" over and over and over.

These Gaia worshippers and doom porners should all get together and have a mass suicide. If you love your mother. I mean, REALLY love your mother, become a part of the solution, as opposed to a part of the problem. Gather at the Georgia Guidestones. Make Ted Turner pround.

You can't take money with you when you die.

Roger that. The only thing we take with us is what we've done.

I disagree. We take with us nothing at all.

But we leave behind what we have done ....

So, what do we want to leave behind? Nothing?

The question is why would God create a specie that is perfectly capable of either ruining its own environment or preserving it? It seem more likely that God is observing what we will do; and if not the 'right' thing cancel the experiment. I think IT is garnering information; coming to an understanding of its creation. Once every possible action the human can do, including murder/scandal/brilliance/flashes of genius, (everything IT needed to know about) IT WILL DESTROY us. Its over.

As a metaphor, you built your own home, tended a/your garden; raised animals and let your property go to wreck and ruin; does that make any sense? Why would you allow your environment (you created for your sustenance) to decay.

Perhaps it is time we stopped punishing ourselves for our nature and started to look at what we really want to be then?

I think most people would rather play the blame game (finger pointing); who is responsible for this, the errant parent (GOD) or the rebellious child, its creation?

Sorry but I refuse to let an entity that has, by its very absence, refused to help me, take control of MY life.

It created you; you have no choice (ITS RULES trump your idea of merciful equity, the hope of reasonable dialog with God is laughable). I agree with you. You can on the other hand talk to the Universe (it is far more interesting in what it can and cannot do).

As I have said many times, humans are the only species that does not quite fit into the "natural to planet earth" environment.

For instance, we create artificial structures to protect us from the planets natural climate and can get sunburned in an instant and die within a few minutes in cold temperatures - unless we cloth ourselves accordingly - something no other species needs to do.

We did not come from this planet - we were introduced to it - and we are doing a mighty job of destroying it.

Now, I must run, I've got to get to the mall because the TV told me there is a sale on - 50% off - bargain.

Or maybe from below as in the Zuni (New Mexico) Creation stories. Then again the ones who were underground could have come from elsewhere and were underground due to the same problems you suggested.

But the first children, in a cave of the earth, were unfinished. The cave was of sooty blackness, black as a chimney at night time, and foul. Loud became their murmurings and lamentations, until many sought to escape, growing wiser and more man-like.
But the earth was not then as we now see it. Then Sun-father sent down two sons (sons also of the Foam-cap), the Beloved Twain, Twin Brothers of Light, yet Elder and Younger, the Right and the Left, like to question and answer in deciding and doing. To them the Sun-father imparted his own wisdom. He gave them the great cloud-bow, and for arrows the thunderbolts of the four quarters. For buckler, they had the fog-making shield, spun and woven of the floating clouds and spray. The shield supports its bearer, as clouds are supported by the wind, yet hides its bearer also. And he gave to them the fathership and control of men and of all creatures. Then the Beloved Twain, with their great cloud-bow lifted the Sky-father into the vault of the skies, that the earth might become warm and fitter for men and creatures. Then along the sun-seeking trail, they sped to the mountains westward. With magic knives they spread open the depths of the mountain and uncovered the cave in which dwelt the unfinished men and creatures. So they dwelt with men, learning to know them, and seeking to lead them out.

I would not predict 75%. World population is expected to top out pretty soon. Some not-so-tough species aren't going to make it. We should concentrate on species that are really different, and let minor local variants go. Preserve the most biodiversity we can.

You know that there is another way to look at this, I dont know what the last 4 events were but I know of the Dinosaurs, Ice Age and all that.

I believe the Earths on a cycle, it warms up, the sea levels rise, something may happen to create an Ice Age where the Ice expands and the Earth reshapes under vast moving Ice flows, cleaning and pushing the previous inhabitants down into Oil and Fossils only for the Ice to eventually start retreating as the Earth heats up again and other species start to form, next time it may not be something that ends up Human or Dinosaur - it may end up like a Grey (if they exist) or like smart Dolphins with arms and fingers.

However, I predict that we are so smart and getting smarter, that we will survive the next event, not all of us, a good chance to cull anyone who doesnt have a passport..but we can build ships that go to the moon, we can build places like Dubai in the desert, we can sure as hell build structures to survive whatever mass extinction can throw at us.

Unless it were zombies, or ISIS, then we are dooomed.

Bring it on I say, Im bored anyway.

I agree, we should stop helping Africans, World Aid and all that unbalances mother natures rhythm. If they cant help themselves then they need to go.

One thing we learn as engineers is that there are 2 environments - the "built" environment and the "natural' environment.

To even acknowledge this wall between us and the earth (including the rest of its species) defines who we are as a race.

How could there have been a "65 million years ago" if the Earth was created only in the last ~6,000 years?

who do we think we are ????

humanaty only exist for 1,5 million years..
compare to the 3 billion years of earth its less than an eyeblink

now we think we can rule nature???????

loll ....Homo Sapiens are self destrucktive..... nature wont have to do anything

Forensick:

I believe the Earth's on a cycle...

This way of thinking seems to be the current balm of denial that won't accept the contribution our activities add to the overall cycles of climate and bio-diversity changes under way. 'It's not us, it's the earth, it's nature'! So goes the cry of denial. The other cry of obtuse denial is 'show me the evidence'! Yet, when shown the evidence, it is rabidly denied and rejected.

Fact is, the earth is always on a cycle, there's never been a time in its very long history that it hasn't ever been on a cycle. However, the earth's cycles generally tend to be slow and long, allowing time for most life forms to make adaptation and to continue to survive and exist. There have been many cycles of change throughout earth's history that have occurred far more rapidly, which denied time for adaptation, and consequently, extinction ensured where adaptation was not made.

Our time for adapting our behaviour came and went, and thus our own demise is assured. We may not fully 'die out' or cease to exist as a species, but all that we are today will be erased. Obviously, we can still deny that which is inevitable, we can deny it with absolute utter conviction, but it won't change the course of the changes we ourselves contributed to.

Our technological prowess is not good enough or smart enough to save us, it will only be able to afford us borrowed time, an extension to our suffering as we slowly begin to contract and shrink and collapse, and as it begins it will gradually increase its rapidity of changes as their effects cascade to overwhelm us.

Yes, the earth is on a cycle, and so are we, and ours is coming to an end.

I have been saying this, well since I was old enough to start wondering about "things", a good 50 some years.

I have always felt we are not indigenous to this planet. We either came here or were brought here or were even "made" here.

If we were an experiment, it has failed miserably beyond belief.

Destroyer of Worlds...that should be our name.

True, very true also we have no natural food target like rest of the animal kingdom does, also we are the only species who needs to cook our foods with fire & prepare our foods to be edible by adding spices & salts etc. We are an oddity to this planet...

You may be right.

Wouldn't it be fascinating if we were some genetic experiment gone bad? Aliens show up to Earth with the intent of making a self-aware and sentient race so they genetically modify chimpanzees and out come us. If we pass the test we are introduced to galactic society, if not we are left here. Seems as though we are failing the test as of the moment. Maybe that's why they haven't come back for us.

This is all speculation of course, but still interesting.

Or they made us as a terraforming tool. An inhabital world for us could be the ideal world for them.
would make a good film anyway if there isn't already one about that 😁
