Boeing released an update video of the 767-2c becoming a KC-46 and the first full fledged KC-46 that is being assemble now. With luck, I'll be getting some pics of them this summer.

EMD-2, the first true KC-46 is currently in one of the 787 shops doing boom/fuel system tests. It's scheduled to fly next month, so they're getting close.

Why would the replacement tanker which has been needed for many years be based off a 767 platform which is already obsoleted by 787?

Because if they build it off a 787 it will be 5-6 years before the first aircraft flies, minimum. Then they would have to modify the aircraft, and test it as a freighter, then test how it would react with receiver aircraft and if there are any wake turbulence issues, etc. The 767 is a known quantity, has already been sold as a tanker, with the line ending, has a wide open production schedule with very little backlog.

With the updated systems that Boeing installed, to update it for military use, it's not nearly as obsolete as the name implies.
