Saudi Arabia 'seeking to head United Nations Human Rights Council'

www.independent.co.uk...

I don't know what to make of this, but it made my tea come out my nose when I came across the information.

Saudi Arabia is reportedly planning to make a bid to head the United Nations' Human Rights Council, in a move that has been described as the "final nail in the coffin for the credibility" of the HRC.

Reports of the bid come just days after Saudi Arabia posted a job advertisement for eight new executioners. This year it has already put 85 people to death in what has been branded by Amnesty International a "macabre spike" from the 87 people it killed in total last year.

The country will move to assume lead control over the HRC after 2016 when the presidency is awarded to a new nation.

..... is all I have to say.

How about you good people? Thoughts....?

*Off to clean my keyboard.

The only thing at this point that could make the UN a bigger joke would be Ronald McDonald elected to the International court of Justice.

So who should head up the UN Human Rights Council, then? Because from where I sit, I don't see one nation on Earth with the credentials necessary to confidently fill that role.

So are we to pick from the lesser of two (or multiple) evils, yet again? Aren't you getting tired of doing that?

Why not?

If ever there was a country that knows human rights violations, it would be the Saudi's, right?

There isn't a nation on Earth that truly deserves to be the head of a UN council on Human Rights. All of 'em have issues of some sort...past, present, and likely future.

They still have slavery in Saudi,
excuse me, it was abolished officially in 1962
however, they do engage in human trafficking;

Well before everyone ejaculates at this hilarious news...

How would your country stand up to scrutiny if it was the nation in the title???

Just as bad, yes?

Reality bites doesn't it.

Patriotic, holier than thou BS aside, btw.

No. The US only executed 35 people in 2014.

Nope.

But I get the whole "scathing boner of hatred for the West" gimmick.

It's boring and lazy.

Sorry Charlie,
but when it comes to treatment of women
treatment of homosexuals
treatment of people who are not native to Saudi

there are few countries in the world that are as bad

heck, even slavery is still openly practiced
except they don't call it that,
see my post before this one and the reference.

In some, if not most, cases, that's all you can do. It's unfortunate, it would be nice to be able to hold one country, or entity up as an example to emulate.

It's a nice idea...but reality, alas, doesn't work that way. Lesser of two evils is usually the only choice you have.

But, to answer your question? Yes, I do get tired of it.

Yeah, but America is Satan.

It's silly to even pretend Saudi Arabia gives a crap about human rights.

I don't believe he was advocating for the House of Saud. He was pointing out the sorry fact that no nation, and I can't think of one either, is exactly lily white in regards to its human rights records.

Sigh, I suppose so

we have people who won't bake cakes
or make flowers for homosexuals;
that is far far worse than throwing them off buildings
and beheading them

we don't protect our women from such evils as
voting
driving
swimming
sports

we force employers to pay wages to domestic servants
how silly of us
why we are so stupid as to jail those who refuse to
pay wages

we have laws against paying people according to their race,
I know that is just so wrong
maybe Saudi has it right and we should look to their example

Yep, the US is so evil and bad and our human rights laws
don't hold a candle to the compassionate the morally upright Saudi's
