as above .

this issue has come up on other boards to varying degrees

and the issue is - people editing posts after replies have been published

most of the time - it doesnt make much difference - no big deal - but when the remove or add text in direct response to the later replies - it can make a big difference - esp if the poster is of questionable honesty // integrity

the ATS system currently uses date stamp only - which is as much use as tits on a fish - given the 2 hour edit window

the system needs changing to time stamped edits - then we can tell if edits were made before or after replies

I second this, but don't know how easy/hard it would be to achieve.

I'm with you...

BTW - a quick fix for this is to send them a U2U with the following verbiage: Nice edit di(k head

The response is usually a good coversation piece over drinks with friends.

I frequently make edits after I post.
But the vast majority of the time it is immediately afterward
when I spot a glaring spelling or grammar error:
or as frequently happens I realize I was not clear in what I said
and need to reword and add stuff to make my point more salient.

Then by the time I finish my edit:
it is not unusual for people to have posted replies to my original post.
So I never saw their replies at all because I was too busy making corrections.

I often wait to do corrections until I read the post
because it is way too easy for these old hands to
accidentally erase my entire post or hit the wrong key
and poof all my work is gone. So I'll post as soon as I finished
so my work doesn't disappear during an edit.

So I post, read it, then make corrections.
All before I read any replies or before replies are posted.
Then after re-posting my corrected post, I find people have made replies.

So the corrections are not intended to frustrate people,
they are simply because while I was making corrections,
someone else was replying:
then I hit the edit button and find that one or more people have replied.

If I make a correction that affects replies,
I'll normally note it in the reason for my edit.

I know it makes you upset, but maybe other people like me
are not trying purposely to frustrate you
it just happens because of the quick pace
of posting, versus the slow pace of the edit.

That isn't what the post is saying though.

It is more about changing the post completely or taking something out based on the replies.

Going back and fixing typos or grammatical mistakes is no issue at all.

please re-read this :

its the core issue of my argument

Completely agree. The message is useless without a time stamp.

I get that.

But you must also understand that if one is the OP
sometimes one finds that the OP
is flawed or has a mistake in it
because someone in a later post pointed it out.

I have on occasion
made a correction in the OP
that does affect later conversation.

However, I (unlike those you are peeved at)
will say, if people chose to read it
in the edit section
.... was changed or corrected due to
.... pointing out an error that should
have been corrected

Sometimes people make mistakes
and must edit

What I am trying to say is that sometimes forgiveness is in order
how about instead of replying with an ugly epithath as was suggested by another poster.
Pointing out the discrepancy in your next post as a reply to the questionably revised post?

Time stamping means every edit is shown.
I remember another thread where an OCD person said that they often
edit up to 10 times for grammar and spelling
and that puts a long long string of
edits at the bottom which are ugly and unnecessary.
I agree, I often delete the edit line when making several go backs
at edits, then I combine reasons into one edit line (format, spelling, grammar)
If the edits were time stamped then we see a long string of
unnecessary edit excuses.

How about just hitting reply to the offensive post?
Then express your dismay to the actual offender
and point out the error of their ways?
Won't going to the source and expressing your frustration
to the source be much more productive and instructive?

My philosophy: when someone irks you:
tell them to their face and as soon as possible:
never run to an authority figure unless there is danger of physical harm:
never tattle to others:
never gossip to others:
never expect an authority to fix the problem
so you don't have to face the offender:
face the offender and tell them politely:
that scares the he.. out of most people.

I find that frequently telling the offender to their face
and without gossip or involving others frightens most people
into never repeating the offense.
