This is my last chance so I have to take a guess. With the gone with the wind hint I would want to say Clark Gable but he died in 1960 .

I was grasping at straws . After you said just before 1960 I thought of him but I kept trying to figure a bike in?

I would've probably guessed him anyway without the gone with the wind hint but that did clinched it for me thanks . I'm going to take a break I'll think something up tomorrow .

I thought I'd given it away with the "There's a legend where I talked a boy out of shooting me" part. Supposedly the boy wanted to prove that he was really Superman and went to shoot him. George Reeves talked him out of it by saying that the bullet could bounce off and kill a bystander. The boy put the gun down and gave it up. Good game. Until next time!
