Sputnik - UNSC to Hold Extraordinary Meeting on Ukraine Initiated by Lithuania Friday

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — New clashes erupted in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday after Kiev troops launched an offensive against local independence supporters along the separation line in Donbass, according to DPR Defense Minister Vladimir Kononov.

The fighting centered in the town of Marinka near Donetsk and left at least 21 dead and over 120 injured.

“At the request of the Lithuanian mission, a Security Council meeting on Ukraine will be held on Friday. Representatives of OSCE’s Special Monitoring Mission and UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will hold briefings,” the spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

Earlier on Thursday, the Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) of the OSCE said in a report that it had observed the movement of heavy weapons in southeastern Ukraine.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian General Staff admitted using heavy artillery prohibited by the Minsk agreements.

This is another example of just how precarious things really are in key former Soviet territories. It seems that others have fears of the same type of actions in their own countries.

Appreciate the post.

Well at least the Hunta in Kiev admits to starting it and using heavy artillery in violation of the Minsk agreement.

They didn't even call them "Pro Russian Separatists" this time.

Now if they will only admit the people in the east want nothing to do with Kiev, NATO, The EU, or Russia for that matter…

The fighting began on government held territory, which means the rebels had to cross over and make the first move. Where was this "admission" made? Source?

It's too cold in Russia to fight wars, lets just let them have the area.

Its not the area that irks the powers that be. Its their geography (how many time zones?) their resource wealth, and proximity on two borders to Asian and European markets.

The US has depleted its resources and is bordered east west by two oceans.

Who is in the more enviable position, Russia or the US?

The United States. It has no enemies on its border; Putin believes he is completely surrounded by enemies.

I have found that according to Russian claims. Throughout this conflict whenever the rebels fire artillery miraculously no civilians are ever killed !!!!!

I believe they present all artillery shells and Rockets to Vladimir Putin . He then chants Hebrew incantations over them and rubs them on his hairy bare chest . This gives those artillery shells the power to differentiate between civilian and army casualties .

I am pretty sure they didn't...

The general staff of the Ukrainian forces involved in fighting in the east (ATO) reported that separatist fighters began a major advance against several Ukraine-held positions at 4am today, most notably near the towns of Marinka and Krasnogorovka.

The statement highlights that the rebel advances were accompanied with mortar shelling and the use of heavy weapons, despite the fact they are meant to be kept at least 25 kilometres from the frontlines in accordance with the ceasefire agreement signed in Minsk, Belarus in February. In response, Ukraine's defence forces pushed artillery forces toward the frontline, to repel the attack, they said.

"In order to prevent the enemy advance and avoid losses among our servicemen, the Ukrainian command, after notifying all international partners, was forced to use artillery which were recalled from their stations behind the frontlines in accordance with the Minsk agreement," the statement read.

europe.newsweek.com...

Seems sputnik is mixing real news with propaganda...not really surprising considering the source.

And so Russia's continued decline and isolation marches on. Stuck in a war it can not win nor back out of. An economy in the garbage. A population it has to work harder and harder to isolate and keep under control. A military that has no interest in being sent to Ukraine and is happy to tell everybody when they are captured. The loss of India to the US as its main arms dealer. The complete loss of Africa to the West. China riding the fence. All its former Republics including what were once its closest supporters Belarus and Armenia trying to find a way to move to the West without being invaded like Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine when they tried. Russia is pretty much screwed until somebody else comes into power that does not have to worry about losing face for pulling out of Ukraine.

Getting harder every day for Russia to deny it's involvement in Ukraine. This is one of those things Putin now has to see to the end, as it would seriously hurt him if he won in Ukraine, as you can't deny it then.

Also if he backs out he will see the separatists fall, and would surely feel the blow back for abandoning the separatists...so this is just going to get more interesting as we go further into the year.

Russia is being surrounded. You just say that to make him look foolish.

America has no enemies, lol. America is at war with the world and everyone in it.

I know thats BS because the tire burners in Kiev said that. They can't win, the "rebels" as they are called by Kieviens are the only patriots left in Ukraine.

"Rebels advance" against the Juntas positions because they are fighting for their liberty. The Thugs from Kiev are doing it for money.

Good luck with yet another outside financed and armed puppet government. When the shooting stops they will cry to the EU and NATO overseers for more money and ammunition.

Which is exactly why Putin is irrational, unpredictable and dangerous.
He also has a romantic vision of the former USSR, and formed many authoritarian views while stationed in Germany.

The man is a nutter, and he will need to be dealt with at some point either by the rest of the world or by his own country.

Incidentally, there are a lot of Russians currently fleeing Russia, fearing a crackdown and a fast return to the Soviet era. All liberal thinking people in Russia are worried about the rising threat of Orthodox religion and extreme Nationalism, they're leaving in their droves, and those who can't are sending their kids out of the country.

The pace is picking up, and as I said before I fully believe we will be at war with Russia by the end of 2016.

If Kiev's forces fired first why did Sputnik (read: the Kremlin) see the need to completely whitewash the fact that the separatists had artillery in the area. Instead they tried to distract from that fact by making it look like Kiev had artillery sitting in the area.

So Rebels moved into government held areas to attack, artillery was used to defend government forces (while rebels also had artillery there), and somehow we take from this that Kiev Junta EVIL?

I am missing something.

Is Russia evil for not letting Chechnya and Dagestan become free countries?

Russia has driven the states around it away. Anytime any former territory began talking to the West they faced military actions. Ukraine was the final straw. Belarus and Armenia once loyal to Russia have had enough. Offered nothing but, poverty and threats who can blame them. They look at the old Warsaw Pact states that went with the west and see huge increase in quality of life while they have languished. When Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine made efforts to better the lives of their people they suddenly found their territory being taken and Russian backed rebels backed by Russian troops carving out chunks of territory. Mean while the US has pretty much allied itself with the rest of the planet. This is all because of Russia actions.
