Started life as a long range strategic fighter/bomber until the USAF got its knickers in a twist and convinced congress that the Navy shouldnt be in possession of a strategic bomber, since that was *their* role. So the Navy took a fantastically competant aircraft and slapped some cameras on to make it into a recon plane, a role which it excelled in.

Eww...

In my opinion I favor the Raptor followed by the F-23...
How do you all feel about the Super Bug? It looks clean cut to me.

That is a ncie looking plane but i prefer my widow..........ahh nothing beats flying at mach 2.8 with stealth and being to out range a raptor....but thats for another thread.
Did look like a reacon plane when i first saw it, the F14 was beatiful too, why does the navy always buy beatiful planes?

My top 3 is:

1-RA-5 Vigilante
2-F/A-18E "Super Bug" Hornet
3-F-14D Tomcat

The F-18 and the F-14 are a very close tie really, I love them both...

Just the sleak look of the Vigilante and the fact it isn't a very well known nor common aircraft which was very advanced for it's time...and the fact it was designed to drop nukes!

I completely agree but I still love the RA-5 for personal reasons
like stated in the subject, it's my honest opinion, not a fact lol

BTW, what the hell markings are on there? it's not a US F-14 is it?

No, that is the first Iranian F-14 and the marking has been on the Iranian planes since the 1920s

I am sorry to say but the RA-27 looks horrible! The best ever USN aircraft is undoubtably the F-14"tomcat". It is the hottest babe the USN has

Now can you truly say that any thing comes close to this!I think not!

Heh, I don't go with mainstream things, it's just me...

Iran has F-14s? nice...so the US was friends with Iran at some point then?

I like the camo layout though...

Yes. All until a little regime chance and we didnt dig the party going into power so we ceased relations with them and severed military sales to them. They still had F-14s that where on the production line to get delivered but when all of this happened there wasnt a chance in - that we would sell the rest to them... I think it happened in the late '70s...

In reality, there probably arent more then 2 or so left in flying condition, the rest are hanger queens and the ones that are still flying now (if there are any) will join them in the coming months

What is you source? From what I undrestand many of them are still operational (20-40), that is why Iran is copying the AIM-54.

Just double checked and according to global security 36 of them are operational

Yes during the 70s Iran and the US were very close friends. Iran had the strongest airforce in the middle east and was soon to become one of the strongest in the world. The imperial iranian airforce had close to 100,000 personal in its airforce. The had 166 F-5s 190 F-4s and had 79 F-14s and had ordered 300 F-16s and a further 80 F-14s and were planing to share the development costs for the United States Navy's new F-18 fighter. 79 F-14s were delivered and the Iranian piotlets trained with the Top Guns before the revolution took place. They did great (to say the least) in the Iran-Iraq war and after the war Iran learnt to reverse engineer around 70% of the parts and many of them are still operational today.
