earthquake.usgs.gov...

5.8 just hit off the Juan de Fuca plate. But it's not that so much as what I am seeing after it on live readings. The fault is remaining active, spewing out smaller quakes...

We've been through this before... But someone just asked me to keep an eye on the west coast in another thread so... I'm tellin yas, that fault's still fidgeting. Hopefully just small aftershocks from the 5.8...

Eyes open peoples, she's cranking up again...

I'm watching the Myrtle Point, OR seismo via GEE. It's certainly still spitting out quick-succession little ones right behind the 5.8, almost to the point of making me want to make a Ritalin joke for the JdF plate if I could make it work

Yeah, see? These guys that don't watch live data think we're kidding. But my trusty friends here know I would never say it if I wasn't seeing it myself. So I'm glad you're watching too. Seems to have calmed a bit now... For the moment.

In the meantime, let's revel in getting accused of creating doomporn once again! Don't ya love it?

I have no doubt you wouldn't say anything about a region if you didn't see a worrisome pattern or uptick. It's only doom porn if it's unfounded & lacking any evidence, as well as tangible data to review. Thus, doom porn is not applicable to your threads

Likely means it's not going to churn anything bigger out, going by the 1 mag of spacing rule. It doesn't always hold true, but off the top of my head, I seem to recall that it does, for the most part.

Also, Toys'R'Us has Jaegars. Think they were around $30, had to practically drag my husband out of the isle repeatedly saying, "No." Budgets & all that grown-up junk.

Interesting, does that magnitude of one rule apply both ways or only if its a magnitude of one lower then the previous quake?

Both ways, I believe. A higher quake afterward always draws attention, to see if the magnitude drops for any following ones. Lower mag quakes aren't quite as suspect, the main shock is usually evident at that point. It's not exact science since a bigger quake can always happen, but it is a good rule of thumb.

Does anyone know what the pattern was in japan in 2011?

Was there a pattern to even follow there?

Juan is a very similar fault correct?

Thanks in advance for the education

Try this site. I went back to Jan 1, 2011 and I do recall there being a 7.2 two days before on March 9, 2011 at 02:45 UTC with earthquakes continueing as in an aftershock pattern for almost 2 days , then bam the 9.0 hit on March 11, 2011 at 05:46 UTC..

Thank you, I did not know that.

Thanks for the link

So since we are over due in Cascadia this recent activity is troublesome.

Anyone live along the coast there? You have plans in place for an event? High ground picked out?

I would keep the radio on, and if you feel it head inland.

Thoughts and prayers are with you guys

I better state that this is in reference to the events leading up to the March 11, 2011 EQ in Japan, not Cascadia...
When you think about it that 7.2 foreshock, it was a very small window of warning in geological time. Probably the 7.2 was thought to be the biggie mainshock with no inkling that an even bigger one was coming and that the 7.2 was a warning. Hense, the Thundershirt on Charlie my avatar...I am no where's near Cascadia, and hope this is it in activity for a while and that this released some of the pressure building, stay safe...
