well, take solace i China knowing that war with us, unless planned to milk both of us dry, would result in global economic ruin. Same with us. We will both poke each other back and forth so our militaries make a bunch of noise. But the business folks, the ones who pay the military....they have no interests in a war that they can't control and milk profit from.

China does not want a war with the US. It does want to dominate all the other states in the region. It is trying to do this by pushing up against the line and not crossing it. China wants to know just who the US would go to war to protect? Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand are all covered by treaties with the US. Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore by treaty with the UK. That leaves places like Vietnam, Burma and Taiwan. Where no official treaty exists to draw in the US. China also wants to get into a better strategic position. It knows it can not take on the US so has to try and put itself in a position where it can try and make it costly for the US to aid the other Pacific states.

China's real problem is it sucks at diplomacy. If it was smart it would have tried to divide the Pacific states. Instead its heavy handedness now has Japan working with Philippines, Vietnam, Australia, and India through a series of agreements. It has caused the return of US forces to the Philippines. It has cause Malaysia to offer air bases to the US. It has driven Vietnam and Burma into the pro US camp. It has caused to creation of the US/India/Japan trilateral. It has caused several Pacific states to increase cooperation with NATO, with a recent joint naval exercise in the ROK that had US, South Korean and a Turkish warship training together.

China has foolishly placed itself in a terrible strategic position where it has for the first time united the US, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Singapore and Burma all into one big pro US anti China coalition. So China needs to push up to the line but, never cross it.

I think China will not back down as they have the Russian backing just the way Russia has Chinese backing on the Ukraine issue.

These two nations know that only together they will be able to stand up to the Western powers.

I agree and I think they agree also which is why the potential for that scenario worries me.

Russia has China backing om Ukraine? o.O

Why? To begin with, Russia's use of a referendum to break Crimea away from Ukraine contradicts one of the core tenets of Chinese foreign policy: mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty and non-aggression and non-interference in another country's internal affairs. China does not support referendums or attempts by domestic groups to seek independence. Similarly, China has never annexed an undisputed territory of a neighboring country in order to protect the territory's ethnic Chinese majority.
