Yeah you're the leader of the biggest cult in the world, 2 billion members and counting, why would you bother to stay in touch?....

Anything religious hasn't been relevant for over 100 years. Religion is now a reactionary force, where it used to be a creative one. It cannot adapt its teaching to modern times, where it might offer insights into issues such as cloning, stem cell research, technology, the environment, etc. It can only react to what is created by those who are relevant, and react badly in most cases.

Remember the Taiping Rebellion? Neither do I. Yet it was the largest civil war of the 19th century, eclipsing the American civil war. The rebels were led by a charismatic Christian, who had an assistant who spoke to God, thus impelling the masses to mobilize under Christian authority.

The point is, no one remembers the rebels of the Taiping rebellion. No one remembers the charismatic leader. No one will remember Al Queda. No one will remember ISIS. These are reactionary farts in the wind being crushed under modernity and any outburst is a last ditch effort. They are not creative forces, they are irrelevant to modern issues, and they will not change the world in any meaningful way.

In other words, who cares?

a failed pope unless a miracle happens. he'd better start thinking of ways of gracious exit, as Benedict did. And, we don't have to wait 8 years as we waited for Benedict. Benedict could resign equally honorable at his 80, not waiting to 86. The same is valid for now saint JP2 who waited until the patience of the most devote catholics was completely exhausted. He wasn't de facto ruler of Vatican in his latest years. Benedict and others were. Francis has that option to choose his style brought nothing new to the planet, and to step down in favor of a younger, stronger, and with new ideas person of RCC. Or to stay until the last breath and to say many other STUPID things. He is not stupid. Therefore it is preplanned. Damn it. I feel bad about that guy. No I don't hate him.
