Maybe I'm missing something (quite likely), but I'm hoping there is a system that tells one when one has starred or flagged a thread.
Currently doing it twice by mistake actually removes a star or flag from an opinion or member one wants to support.
Sure, you can can reward or support them again, but when in a hurry or less experienced you might not notice it.
Besides that, especially on threads about members, it can be hurtful when a star disappears.
Sure, sticks and stones, but making people wonder what suddenly changed your mind about them - when you did it by accident - is not nice.

For example, I wanted to put a star on somebody's photo, but I couldn't recall whether I'd done it before.
So now I left it, because if I did, and especially if they are logged in at the moment, they might feel sad that a star is suddenly gone, when that is the opposite of what I wanted to do.

OK, ATS is not other social media, but on Facebook one can always see who "liked" what, including your own likes.
It's a better system.

Well the flag over a thread turns white once you click it, so it does tell you that you already flagged a thread. But yeah, for the points I agree - no way to know if one has already clicked a star or not. But remember that unlike flags, you can't undo a star click. So if I were to give you a star, forget all about it, come back and click "star" once again, you would not lose any stars.

The flag itself already indicates whether you've flagged the thread or not.

After you've starred a post, subsequent stars don't show up anywhere other than the screen you starred it on and those go away when the page is refreshed. They don't temporarily affect the tally.

Gulp.
Now I'm even happier I followed my intuition and didn't star the post, at the risk of removing one.

OK, thanks,
I see what happens with the flag.
Not sure that pushing it again "un-flags" it though.

But with stars?
So if I star the post, and I made a mistake (was a while back or whatever) it cannot hurt them and take a star away?

Correct. You can only give one star per post. After one they don't register, even temporarily. No risk of removing a star, ever, only flags can be removed.

ETA: I just flagged this thread. Do you see two flags now?

If you star a post, you can't remove one. Allow me to simplify:

- You can only star a post once, and you can only flag a thread once. Correct? Now...

- If you click a flag once, you give the thread one additional flag. The flag turns white to show you that you flagged it.

- If you click the flag again, you take back that flag, and the thread's flag count returns to whatever it was before you clicked the flag. Consequently, the flag will become black once again.

- If you click the star for a post, you give the post one additional star. The star turns gold to show you that you starred it.

- If you click the star more than once, you do not take back that star - the post's star count returns to the value it was after you clicked the star the first time. Consequently, in that post, any additional stars from you will not be saved, except the first one you gave. That way when you star a post, you can only star a post once - and you cannot accidentally take that star away.

Yes it does. The minute the page refreshes, the change will show.

Here, let me prove it to you. Giving you a flag...

EDIT: you are now at 3 flags. Do you see it?

Edit: Now it is down to 1. So yes, the flags can be taken back.

(don't worry, I'll give you your flag back, this was just for demo purpose).

Ok, now prove it with stars.

I mean I know you can remove them or put them back (flags), but it can happen so unintentionally, and hence I feel there should be a notification.

You try it.

Take this thread of mine: www.abovetopsecret.com...

My OP has five stars. Correct? If you give me a star, the post will rise to 6. Now once it is at 6 stars, try and see if you can take the stars back. I insist, try it - you'll see that the post will stay at 6.

Actually it has 7 stars, so we'll make it 8 then, but here goes.

Yeah, I kinda guessed you did. Would you be so kind to return the flag to the OP so that his thread can rise back up to 3 flags, thus strengthening our point that flags can be re-given after being taken?

Um... nope, it has 7 flags and 5 stars.

EDIT:

Uh... Well, had 7 flags and 5 stars. Now you gave me 1 flag and 1 star, so I am up to 8 flags and 6 stars.

Now try and see if you can take one of the stars back.

Oops, yeah, but 7 flags, not 6.
I just gave it another flag which makes it 8.
But you're right on the stars.
I couldn't remove or change it.
I could swear though at a time this happened.
So I can star the picture, without any risk!

I'm sure lots of people have wondered about this.
Talk about nasty.
