The hard landing was the result of a Fly By Wire problem. During the taxi to the takeoff position, the flight control system switched from simple ground mode, to augmented flight mode before takeoff. The crew lifted to a hover, but couldn't stabilize, and set down, resulting in a hard landing. The pilots shut down the engine and electronics and egressed. The airframe suffered significant damage, but the airframe systems designed to help protect the crew in the event of an accident worked and the crew suffered minor injuries. The failure has been reproduced in the simulator.

They'll probably update the software so the switch can't be made on the ground, or has to be deliberately selected.

Second prototype to take flight by early 2018. Sikorsky plans on weapon integration tests potentially in 2019.
