I woke up this morning turned on CNN and they had a brief news segment on Josh Duggar; he is part of the show "19 Kids and Counting". It has come out that when he was a teen he molested 5 underage girls. He eventually confessed what he had done to his parents and they put him in counseling and made sure his victims got help too. I am concerned because he is married and has children.

Link: www.usatoday.com...

I wonder has he truly stopped and will never repeat those actions? I am very saddened by this news.

What say you ATS?

You don't 'fix' a sex offender.

It's an actual biological sickness and there is no known cure. Sure you can 'not give into your impulse', but at the end of the day there's a very sad fact about pedophiles.

They fall in love with children. They can't help it, they find them attractive and they can't help it. No amount of therapy is going to help.

Funny they say they got the victims 'help' as well. I bet that was in the form of a giant cheque. And it comes out now after the statute of limitations is passed of course..

Sad, he admitted to it, he should be charged anyway.

Yikes:

InTouch reported that his father took Josh to an Arkansas state trooper who was a personal friend, who took no action other than a "very stern talk." That officer is now serving a 56-year term in prison for child pornography, the magazine reported, and no case was ever brought against Josh Duggar.

The friend of the family state trooper who gave the stern talk is serving a 56-year sentence for child pornography?

You are educating me on this subject...my heart and soul feels pain for all the victims...I just wish sex offenders did not exist.

The stern talk must have been about how not to get caught.

I did not know that part of the story...thank you for your information. Since that officer is in prison for his child offenses; it is obvious why he went easy on Josh...what do they have their own underground network?

some of whom were his sisters.

His parents knew this - he knew this, and he still became a prominent, public voice.

Time for obscurity for all of them.

Unfortunately, as long as there is sex, there will be deviants and abusers. Sometimes, it isnt a bad thing, since we are all unique we shouldnt have exactly the same turn-ons. But there is a well defined limit about what is acceptable and what is not and some very good reasons why.

Isn't it illegal to release such information about a minor to the public?

He was a kid himself, 14. Is it possible that this is a case of kids experimenting with each other? He's what, 28 now? Is it possible that he's long since recovered and this is currently a non-issue?

Lena Dunham admitted to molesting her six year old sister and she's still the media's darling but this paper comes out and it's a scandal--why?

Thanks for the thread. My wife will be saddened by this too.
She likes this show since it appears to be one of the FEW wholesome shows left on TV.

$$$$
That's why The show was allowed to continue.

Imagine how more powerful it could have been if this was the topic of the show instead of the mother using her vagina as a clown car.

That's pretty much what it comes down to. All we can do is educate folks, especially our kids in how to react to these situations, god forbid they get into one of them.

I'd certainly like to see some dedicated research though, there's obviously more we can do solve the problem.

“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.”

NO mention of the victims lives!
NO surprise here!

I am in my 60's and I did not know about child sex offenders till I was in my early 30's. I found out about it through an article I read in Redbook magazine. I got so angry when I found out that I smashed my kitchen table.

I'm going to agree with you. For now. (at least without more detailed facts)

I've read this does happen in secluded restrictive religious groups. They are repressive and allow no outlet for hormone raging teens. That the teens resort to the only opportunities available to them.

I am 50 and never remember hearing about it till my 30's also. With similar reaction.

Now 5 year olds MUST be made aware of it. Not sure if its just that much more prevalent now or if it was hid from the public better years ago.

Sadly, I lean towards the later.

I also wonder if, in this case, did it only happen when he was 14? Or did it continue later in life?

Like NavyDoc, if it only happened when he was a minor himself how did this become public knowledge?

I'd suggest that it happens in all walks of life and in all demographics--consider that Lena Dunham was brought up in a very "progressive" home and she still did it.

However, you do indeed have a point--when teens are isolated and repressed from normal social developmental milestones , the risk of aberrant behavior goes up. Not only were they homeschooled and their only social peer group outside of siblings were other religious fundamentalists, but they were severely restricted in their behavior with the parents chaperoning the kids on dates and not so much as kissing or handholding or hugs permitted. When normal outlets are severely restricted, abnormal outlets are all that a curious kid has.

Because Lena Dunham isn't a holier than thou, hypocrite, telling other people how to live their lives, what God to worship,
and what is proper sexual behavior.

It really surprises me that you would defend this guy!!

Perhaps a little more research would be of benefit....
