I was browsing the Al Jazeera news website and came across this story regarding Houtis and what not.
www.aljazeera.com...
Then I noticed the swollen cheeks of many in the picture. So I'm asking what is it in their mouths. Could it be leaves of drugs. Chewing tobacco or something else?

Seven, out of the ten people with clearly visible faces in the image appear to be harbouring something in their mouths.

That is a significant percentage, and one wonders whether that percentage carries through the rest of the people in the image, whose faces are obscured by arms, and armaments too. I have no idea what it might be, because the possibilities are extensive. Hell, the shot could have been taken when they were mid way through lunch for all we know!

My guess is Khat/Qat-its a stimulant drug popular in Yeman and Somalia.
Effects are like speed-keeps you awake, gives you energy, leads to psychosis.
Great for fighters/child soldiers...

en.wikipedia.org...

Edit-A load of Somali guys lived in a squat next door to some mates of mine, and they would chew it all bloody night, every bloody night.
You would know when they were on it when you could hear them ranting and argueing all bloody night, every night.

God only knows why you would want to take a drug that makes you argue and rant, but they couldn't get enough of it,much to the dismay of their sleep deprived neighbors.
I think its been banned in the UK now.

Yup - those look like they are chewing khat 99% certain.

You know it's flooding England a bit - the immigrants have demanded and the dealers are supplying - it may not even be illegal... uncertain but it's easy to get hold of.

At a guess I'd say it's probably Khat , a mildly narcotic plant.

Ah,I wasn't sure but I thought it was banned here now.
Not that that seems to stop people taking drugs.

Was going to say Khat most likely however....

The photo would be so much better if it was Big League Chew

Dental abscesses. The whole crowd smells of rotten teeth. (I have absolutely no proof of this, it's pure speculation. But these fellows don't look like the type to visit a dentist that often.)

" Oral Abscess sufferers of Yemen!
Your country needs you to rise up and fight, right at the time you feel a nauseous fever and want to lie down all day with that throbbing tooth pain.."

Nah,sorry pfishy-not buying the theory.
Its qat.

But you were kidding,right?
