Would help a lot to know the size of the whole, maybe put your foot next to it when you take the pictures next time.

Really a lot of them are similar but size can narrow it down.

It looks like bear scat I have seen. I don't know if DNA can be extracted, and whether what is ate would contaminate it or not. It can be different in appearance depending what the bruin was eating. They do get into things bear are not meant to be into and eating. I actually had an encounter with a bigfoot hunting in Michigan back in the 70's. There would be footprints in the area. Somewhere this critter went from the scat pile and tracking should not be that difficult to find what it was.

That is actually a 1920s mine. Well, at least that's the last time they mined it. It could be older. Part of me will always wonder if it's Jonathan Swift's Lost Silver Mine...we thought we might try to pump the water out. You can only get in about 50 feet before you hit water.

Whatever they were mining, supposedly they would load it in wooden boxes inside the mine before loading into a covered truck that never left before midnight. So the family wonders if it was silver or something more nefarious, like uranium.

Then supposedly the company packed up one night, no warning, and never returned.

Even more interesting, is the former owner of the property, who also helped work the mine, was called a "Bleeder"- meaning, he could stop people's bleeding. He was so good, they said all a person had to do was go tell this guy who was injured and the guy could stop the bleeding without even having the person physically present.

Oh, man. That got me thinking about that Cheech & Chong thing where they're Russian and one guy is telling the other to taste the dog poo.
I imagine that the whole experience would be like this:

I'd be very interested to know if you are successful in pumping out the water.
Also, is there anywhere online to read about the history of the mine?

Just curious as we have a lot of caves in my area and we used to explore them quite often!

I did call the state about it, and they said they didn't begin keeping records till much later, so they wouldn't have anything about it at all. The only thing I thought of is possibly going to the courthouse and seeing if the mining company had to have a lease on file or something.

That's a good idea!
We found a house a year or so back we wanted to find info on.
We went to the courthouse and found ALL sorts of stuff.

Not just the usual information about who owned it, etc. AND one of the ladies who worked there was
like an encyclopedia of information (gossippy type stuff)...

That's definitely the way to do it, that's the way it's been done since ancient times.
