Deleting post. It was snarky and inappropriate. Apologies.

The numbers of injured that they are giving on the scanner are scary. They have stated 100 already and added 18 and 21 more transported now. I can't imagine how scary it must be there. And more people are asking for pick ups of injured.

On the live link, some key phrases I picked up from the mayors speech were;

"I've never seen anything like this"

"We have everyone working on this including the department of homeland security"

(I'm guessing normal ?)

"Everything is scattered everywhere.."

(He seemed puzzled as to how that could happen in a simple derailment)

He also seemed to indicate that it started from the front of the train, at the engine.

Maybe someone sabotaged the train ?

Fox News mention that an eye witness who was driving on the nearest street saw an explosion and a fireball.

Hey I don't know if anybody brought this up but isn't Americas infrastructure all f*cked up? Wasn't this going to happen eventually because our roads, dams, etc aren't being paid attention to and neglected?

Or are we jumping to terrorists right now?

If true, they'll find residue. ISIS has not made a claim yet. And most likely won't.

Threeeyesopen.. I'm still a PA state fire instructor. DHS and FBI usually shows up for training and calls like this. You have to rule out the sabotage.. not unusual.

But I got to admit..... looking at the aerial shot. The cars are lying in the most unusual form I've witnessed to date.

I am watching live news on this right now. They had a press conference about an hour ago (ish), and called it a "mass casualty event", though they state there are, so far, only five known to have been killed, and six with critical injuries. They refuse to speculate on the cause thus far. Witness reports aren't very helpful. One states the train was turning, then seemed to just flip over. Another states it might have slowed just before derailing, though that was an amended report. One not on the train says he saw flames, though we don't see any in the video. The footage isn't all close, however. The train, what little we can see, is a complete mess.

Witness speaking NOW - says some put pressure on wounds to keep people from bleeding out, says he contacted his wife, and the fire department people were there and doing their jobs, sudden flip described, then darkness. Guy is a former congressman of some sort.

Train derailings are a mess. I saw one, as a child, when a cargo train of some sort derailed. The parents went to the site, and we took a look. No crowds there, and I don't think anyone died, but the mess was incredible. Remembering that, and seeing this, I suspect they will find more fatalities.

Prayers for the passengers, their families, and all working to clear the scene.

They just upped the death toll to six.

It's a consideration! A train bridge (small one) in my general area collapsed a couple years or so back, though no one was injured. Just age and disrepair.

Former NTSB guy is talking now, and discussing possibilities. Possibilities include track failure, something on the track, too high a speed for the track, some sort of "train truck" problem, and maybe a weather factor, though he says that isn't likely in this case. They do have "black boxes", so hopefully, they can get some data and find out what happened. Dr, Gross is his name.

I take it back. Saw a better view of the crash. It's on a bend as we all know now.
Apparently there was a crash on that Bend 72 years ago.

www.slate.com...

I'm sure the tracks have been kept up over the years. But passengers describe a wobble at the bend before crashing.

Yes, I heard that as well. The engine was split in two, per CNN. Special OPs had to use jaws of life.

Tragedy and horror. Hard for the mind to process the mangled wreckage.

Please be safe in all you do.

Poor people

There is just too much havok going around in the world right now...
My thoughts will go to them.

The first thought that struck me when I heard it, was immediately the "ISIS hacking threat".
But I have no clue how trains work at all.

There's nothing at all unusual with that. In this sort of situation, one of the first things they try to do is rule out the possibility of it having been a crime, which, unsurprisingly, involves crime scene investigators. Besides that, on the scanner, they were calling in anybody and everybody they could to help out, which is also perfectly normal under these circumstances.

That photo may be of a crime scene specialist doing his job of determining if a crime took place, or it may just be that he was brought in to assist with things. It's absolutely impossible to tell, without knowing the context, and either way, it is perfectly normal.

To the ones saying, "Why are they declaring a Mass Casualty Incident?"

This is a standard practice of any fire department or any emergency medical service across the United States and around the world when it comes to dealing with an incident like this. What it does is help get control of the situation with assistance from all responding authorities. It also helps with the treatment and transport of a given number of patients to local emergency facilities. For the number of casualties associated in an incident such as this. The implementation of a mass casualty plan was necessary to fulfill the amount of manpower and capabilities of the fire department and EMS need for an incident like this.

In the time that I myself have been following the railroads in the United States. I honestly can't remember how long it has been since I've seen a rail car, being freight or passenger, that was as mangled as the one that's been shown in the photos and video. Whatever that car hit or was compromised by, it was large and it either moved or did not move when it was struck.

My belief here is that 'Sabotage' has had a hand.

There have been quite a lot of 'Trains' crashing over recent years and 'power' plants such as that 'Nuclear' Facility the other day in the USA having an explosion occur...

I think there's something going on but its being played down.

Even here i the UK we've had 'fires' and close train accidents...

I personally don't believe it was sabotage or that their is enough info to indicate that.

Things break or go wrong and when it is in something big that is moving fast the end result is never good.
