Cause ESA is good at under planning =). They would send a mission to dark side of moon and forget to add a spot light.

Presidential candidate and Chairman of the Science Advisory committee Ted Cruz wants NASA to focus on space, and not be looking at the Earth for things like climate change.

In his quest to ensure that no more science is released that would bolster the position of climate change, he may force NASA to look more closely into deep space, and might not like what they find.

After all, The Bible preaches that we are alone in The Universe.

And then he'll just cancel the missions which would look for life and NASA will be tasked with a grand "Human Mission to the Moon and Mars" which will only fill aerospace industry cronies pockets but ultimately will be too expensive to get off the ground.

This actually happened in 2006. 10 years of developing instruments and planning down the drain. Had it continued on course it would have launched this year and we might have found life around a nearby star next year or the year after. Instead we're trying to replace different aspects of the science it would have delivered with other smaller, often less capable instruments:

Space science needs long term planning and stable long term budgets. The current "win at all costs" US political system as people seem all too willing to accept, unfortunately provides anything but.

Enter China....

Yep, thats how our gov't works. The private industries create the laws and provide guidance on gov't programs while our elected officials robosign them or blindly follow. Hence, why private industry is typically on on the winning end. Even when they lose they win (bailouts).

it typically boils down to what will make the most money for the largest Oligopolies lobbying congress.
