Another Indian MiG crashed at Tantipara, killing two people on the ground. The pilot ejected safely. The aircraft took off from Hashimara. Still breaking, so not many details.

India has had problems with their MiGs a lot in the last few years. Between 2010 and 2013, they lost 29 aircraft, including 12 MiG-21s of varying types.

Maybe a driving factor in looking at more western hardware?

Definitely play a role in it. The overwhelming cause was pilot error, although they've tried to downplay it. Something like 40% were caused by pilot error.

Don't forget carpets! I kid. Maybe just aging equipment? Poorly maintained?

When we were doing the Hawk India bid, the IAF guys who came over to Warton wanted us to build all of them, they feared the quality HAL would put out.

I think we sold them in fool proof kits so there was very little they could stuff up. Ironically the first crash (on take off) was of one of the Warton/Brough built birds however you have to imagine a pretty tense cockpit when one of the pilots ejected and the other stayed in until it came to its own rest on the runway and he climbed out.

Im saying the pilots are probably more of a threat than the hardware!

The MiG-21 was the premier Soviet fighter in Vietnam, and is still flying in a front line role. Their more modern aircraft haven't had nearly the problems that their older aircraft have.

The crash occurred about 10 minutes after takeoff. It's the second crash of a MiG-27 this year. A person on the ground was injured in the other crash as well. The pilot ejected in that accident as well, but a motorcyclist was hit by a piece of debris after the crash.

On their home turf, the Indians can be a respectable fighting force, even with their old MiGs. They fought US F-15s over there a few years ago and gave them a very good run for their money. However, once you get them out of their own airspace it becomes a different story.

They're biggest problem is keeping their older aircraft flying. They've lost over half of their original MiG-21 fleet.
