Questions, questions (or things that make you go hmmmm)

My buddy and I were driving somewhere today and we passed a sign for a town that listed its elevation above sea level. He wondered aloud how they measure that. He got me wondering too. How do they measure that?

One way to do that, is to anchor a buoy off shore somewhere, which has a device on board which counts the number of feet of anchor cable which is currently deployed beneath the buoy, and transmits that data to shore, where it is then processed and added to the equation which results in the mean average sea level being identified.

As technology improves, measurement of such things is only becoming more precise, with better gauging equipment and faster and more frequent transmission of information.
