Multiple casualties reported from an explosion at a US military base in Mosul. Details arre still coming in but the death toll has been estimated to be 22 US and Iraqi military.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. military reported "multiple casualties" from an explosion Tuesday at an American military base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.


Tuesday's attack came shortly after British Prime Minister Tony Blair arrived in Baghdad on a surprise visit to Iraq.

Details are still coming in but estimates of 10 to 22 dead, including Iraqi and US military from a bombing at a US military base in Mosul, Iraq. The explosions may have been the result of a rocket fired into a dining facility. Sources are now saying there were multiple explosions from either rockets or mortars.

"At 12 pm (0900 GMT) today (local time) an explosion occurred at a US military installation in Mosul causing multiple casualties," it said.

"The cause of the explosion is under investigation."

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Hastings, a spokesman for Task Force Olympia in Mosul, said he would release no more details for the time being.

Pentagon Says 22 Killed, 50 Hurt in Mosul Attack.


The official said the casualties were not caused by a single large explosion. "There were an unknown number of rounds in a rocket and mortar attack. It wasn't a car bombing," the official said
