We used to laugh when they came through. They always had a pallet of beer in cargo. Get them a tool or stand? Have some beer. Escort them to the plane to put stuff on it? Have some beer. Directions to sight seeing places? Beer.

Yep the beer economy is still a staple in the ADF and I suspect will be for a long time to come. You know there is an actual beer ration when on active service? It goes like this, "two cans, per man, per day,... per haps". Talking with a bunch of submariners years ago on the old Oberon class boats they showed me where they stored the beer ration, in a couple of the fwd torpedo tubes and it was crammed full. back in the 60's and 70's Qantas pilots used to run a lucrative trade delivering beer stowed in the cockpit to homesick line station engineers and expats looking for a taste of home. I believe at least 2 cases a week were required for London alone. There was a similar setup in the RAAF during Vietnam.
