Yep the beer economy is still a staple in the ADF and I suspect will be for a long time to come. You know there is an actual beer ration when on
active service? It goes like this, "two cans, per man, per day,... per haps". Talking with a bunch of submariners years ago on the old Oberon class
boats they showed me where they stored the beer ration, in a couple of the fwd torpedo tubes and it was crammed full. back in the 60's and 70's
Qantas pilots used to run a lucrative trade delivering beer stowed in the cockpit to homesick line station engineers and expats looking for a taste of
home. I believe at least 2 cases a week were required for London alone. There was a similar setup in the RAAF during Vietnam.
