Hmm, don't listen to the folk claiming it's Djin or Demons or that you need Jesus. I don't have schizophrenia but I have years of experience with sleep paralysis and all the lovely horrors associated with it. From Demons, Sprites, Shadow people, the Grey's and so on. At first it was terrifying and I thought I was being attacked from paranormal entities and I was becoming possessed, but it only ever happens at times of great anxiety. I put it down to a stressed, hallucinating mind unable to shut off in a state of sleep paralysis. My experiences were purely psychological, as is yours.

Self-diagnose can be very dangerous.

I agree with you.
I used to work in mental health and the thing is many people have normal lives with hearing voices. It is how you respond to them.
A pal of mine is married with two kids and he hears a voice all the time telling him to punch people kill them etc..he has managed to just ignore it.
It is bad people are on here offering really bad advice saying accept whatever god etc...OP this will not help and will send you more ill, do get help and do continue with your meds, they may not be the right ones for you but with time you will get the right meds and dosage, remember everyone is different and different meds work for different people.
Good luck and no they are not demons and you are not possessed.

Yeah, a book came out maybe 4/5 years ago that dealt with 'voice hearers' in a positive way. It was quite enlightening as we only ever hear about negative voices. Some people live their lives with a regular chatter of some disembodied voice.

It sounds like having a friendly shopkeeper of imaginary friend chattering away all day. 'Ooooh look at her! What does she think she's wearing? And don't those apples look nice in that shop? Hmmmm apples. Reminds me of oranges - same shape, different colour...'

I've wanted the book ever since hearing a R4 show about it. They had people interviewed who enjoyed being 'voice hearers.' I recall one of them having the minor moan that the voice was sometimes a little too loud and drowned out who he was listening to.

ETA - Living with Voices. They try and train the experiencers to address the voices 'outside of the illness model' and see them as benign. Obviously, this wouldn't work for the 'kill, rape, murder' type of nasty voices. It seems to work fine with those that are less assholish. : )

lol, the audacity to rant on about supernatural entities and possession being a realistic occurrence, then turn around and claim you have any kind of clue whats dangerous to the human mind! That's rich.

@Belcastro

Seriously dude, don't listen to any of these jesus freak fools, there either disillusion or are deliberately deceiving to gain a sense of superiority over others, that's what Christians do.

What your going though is not real. I don't have the medical qualifications to tell you how to deal with it, but it's not real.

That is a big insult to say to someone with an issue that what they are going through is not real. He experiences it therefore it is very real to him, you do not experience it and you stubbornly say that the issue does not. I do not speak nor write for a sense of superiority, but it is what I love to do. You want to throw everything I do or say into a garbage bin labeled 'Christian trash that doesn't matter', I say that that is a bit arrogant and presumptuous.

Take a look in the mirror guy.

If this issue is really bothering you (it sounds like it does) then why not try something outside of the box, like Islamic exorcism. You can try it and see how things work out, exorcising without Jesus's name.

Try looking into it? Not an expert myself, but just throwing it out there.

I grew up indoctrinated by that vial nonsense. Watched people with a superiority complex mess with the mentally ill and weak minded a like to gain control over them. Even have a family member who convinced little girls they where possessed so he could abuse them. So yes, I talk with authority, its a bunch of trash and anyone who believes it needs serious help.

I look in the mirror everyday mate! Don't have any issues with what I see either. Its the society that accepts these delusional power tripping fairy tales as realistic that does 'my' head in.

Self-diagnose can be very dangerous.

There's nothing to diagnose. I don't have any form of problems with paranoia or voices and never have. I rarely get the sleep paralysis episodes anymore either. I used to live a very unhealthy lifestyle that caused a lot of stress. Exercise and a healthy diet is all I needed. Unless of course you mean a diagnosis from a demonologist, ha.

You say there is nothing to diagnose after making the above statement? And then you make a self-diagnosis that that all it took was a healthy diet and exercise? Your contradiction shows instability.

You need to see a mental health specialist.

Sleep paralysis episodes are extremely common and don't require a diagnosis. I have studied it quite extensively. As you clearly don't know anything about it, I wont take your ignorant insult to seriously.

Good morning

I'd like to thank you for posting this. Not terribly many folks are welcoming and posting this is tough.

As afar as a few concerns..

Yes, the feelings of possession can indicative of some level of hallucination or delusion secondary to schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. The problem is that nobody here can really tell you so or tell you what to do. I am an MA-level therapist who has worked plenty with just about any of the DSM-diagnosable disorders you can imagine. But none of that means anything of substance because their are two problems; I am not you and I am not there.

It would not hurt to ask your psychiatrist about your current medication set. The other thing however is that even with a strong and working medication, breakthrough psychosis can occur; especially in the midst of a manic phase.

To speak to your one concern...technically, if you are not presenting a danger to yourself or others, you cannot be pushed towards a psychiatric admission against your will. If you are alert and oriented (knowing your name, time, day, and situation), are not suicidal, not homicidal and not actively psychotic to an extreme where you are completely unsure of reality, then at least in the US you should not meet admission criteria. Though to be fair, I am mostly speaking of Illinois and the surrounding states and obviously I am not seeking to find out where you live.

My suggestion would be to make the call to your psychiatrist and see what he/she thinks.

Be well and I wish you the best

I agree with you on this.

I would ask the psychiatrist if he/she thinks an exorcism attempt would be ok or harmful to the OP.
As this is a mental disorder, in the mind, much can be either triggered or disbanded by words and thought alone.

Op, if you are a believer in God, I can see why you would want to try exorcism, and in many cultures this is one of the options for schizo type disorders. If your psychiatrist does not think it would hurt you, and could possibly help, then there is no harm in at least asking their opinion on it. The important thing though is to not feed into your disorder, and I am not sure if an exorcism would or would not do that because it all falls on belief.

The mental health system is actually open to some forms of religious/spiritual beliefs and experiences, but it all depends on your case and personal history with the illness. The important thing is to not feed into the illness, and if by seeing an exorcist is feeding into this, then it is probably not a good idea.

Talk to your psychiatrist about it, maybe offer them the chance to come along so they know what is going on if you do take that route, but first and foremost follow your psychiatrists advice before anyone else.

Best of luck to you!

What you describe is classic schizophrenia, what's known as the 'positive symptoms'.

Very unpleasant but nothing to do with the devil, and you're not possessed.

(I'm a mental health nurse)

Absolutely.

I am not a mental health care expert. However, I have been studying the different mental disorders for some time, especially schizophrenia, for the main reason that I wanted to look into the claims that the 'voices' are 'demonic'. For myself, I am completely 100% convinced that these conditions are mental disorders, and no matter how weird or crazy the voices can be to a schizophrenic, they are not 'demonic' in origin.

The people who bring up the 'Jesus Christ' thing, always, inevitably fail to recognize that in these cases, and even sleep paralysis/old hag phenomenon, people from other cultures will often have the same results (a banishing of the 'voice'/spirit/etc) by calling on their own cultural spirits and deities that have nothing to do with the Abrahamic religions.

Belief and faith has a strange power over the mind, doesn't it? Unfortunately, what you believe and have complete faith in doesn't make it the TRUTH.

Really, it's time to step out of the dark ages and stop looking to ancient supernatural explanations for our strange problems and issues.

You are not possessed by demons or Satan. Sorry. I challenge you to take a deep look into schizophrenia, study how it varies culture to culture (some cultures only hear good voices that tell them mundane stuff like 'clean the kitchen', while Americans generally hear 'bad' voices), and try to look a lot deeper than the shallow-minded crap you find in religious and spiritual propaganda.

first off i want to thank all of you for coming to my thread and offering your opinions.

the only thing that bothers me is that i will feel emotions that arent my own and it feels like other people facial expressions are overlapping my own, controlling my face to make the same smiles or frowns or even cry in response to what i think or say.

it really bothers me because it wants me to believe that a girl i used to really like is an angel like.. possesing me.. or something. it wants me to believe angels walk among us and that this girl is one of them.

its really weird to feel a females expressions and emotions all o the time, i thought at first i might have split personalities but i decided that that wasnt the case because i am myself all of the time, i just feel this persons emotions whenever i think something that makes it cry or laugh.

the messed up part is that this person has blocked me on facebook and i have no contact with at all except for what im going through.

Layperson here.

Everyone has a flighty inner dialogue, sometimes, and we are all different people moment to moment... some hear actual voices... 99.999% of the time its an organic brain malfunction in origin ...and that tiny paranormal % is a blank... nobody knows for sure what's going on with those, but a good and evil team is ... not the first answer I'd go for... and I've had experiences where 'spirits' were the best answer to what happened.

Your experiences have none of the paranormal earmarks and sound like the 'average' schizoid experience... low level at that. Most people can, with the correct medication (and it can take a whole lot of trying before finding the right one), live a fine, boringly normal life where they ignore the voices from their brain.

But decent medical help is a must. We are now fortunate to have real science and medicine to help with this... don't be afraid of medical pros... they've heard it all and just want to help. So get that help and make a doctor happy.

I must start off by saying that I am sorry that your experience with the Christian community has been negative. If there are many people that are corrupt know that the teachings we Christians follow are pure and the problem does not lie therein, but when an individual takes in truth he adds what is within his own heart to it.

There are many within the Christian community who are turned off by similar experiences, you are not alone. I am fortunate to have been brought up seeing a good church community, although not entirely being involved with it due to myself and my family being introverted.

What I had to go on were the teachings of my good mother, aunt and grandmother, with their words and actions showing that they were virtuous people. That and the material I chose to read was a driving force in my search to fill the void.

Know that when you speak with a Christian that you also speak with an individual human and because they are Christian it does not mean they are inherently good or evil. Treat them as you would like to be treated and remember that they are not retarded. Many spiritual people are well grounded because they felt the need to fill in the holes in the roads we call dogmas rather than veer off into the woods.

I respond to you with full respect intended,
Peace to you.
