Could it have just been something simple? Like lightning?

It almost looks to me like a transformer blowing. Those things can definitely light up the night like that. Also, depending on the distance, one wouldn't hear anything, but still be able to see it.

I'd be curious to know if there were any power outages following that event.

It looks like one of these.

The second video you posted would seem to confirm that as the street lights go out after the flash.

if it was lightning it wouldn't have been reported by a site like Emergency and Disaster Information Service , would it ?

don't you think if it was a blown up transformer then there would be a report on the same site about a power outage in that area ?

There was in fact a power outage afterwards, I remember distinctly reading about that in another article (sorry no sources)

No.
Why do you think the lights go out in the second video you posted ?

Maybe. Unless they say what it was , then lightning is as likely a reason as any.

according to this site

The mysterious event made some streetlights in the city go out and lights inside apartments and houses flickering.

and

Power engineers have however already rejected a version suggesting a fault in the power supply line leaving the public clueless about the nature of the mysterious flash.

so its still a strange thing until it is explained with proof
