We came here because we didn't like the historical and political baggage of our ancestors. You are bound by your own historical and political schema, so yes, we have ours, but you likewise have yours. It is a mistake to think you "understand" us better because you don't have our schema.

It is those very schema that shape who and what we our. You cannot apply your schema to us and think your understand us because those schema are not who and what we are and they do not shape our worlds and reactions to them.

I don't make the mistake of thinking I understand you. You don't live here and you don't live this culture.

That is perhaps the most backward, ill thought out argument, I have ever seen on these boards. As others will no doubt attest, it is the historical baggage which drove many folk out of England and the British Commonwealth altogether, spawning the expansion into America and the eventual creation of an autonomous, sovereign nation there after much revolution and the infusion of a large amount of tea, in a little place called Boston.

Now, British as I am, and proud to be I might add, I cannot sit back and merely watch as you express the outer limits of your understanding of the past history which has passed between our nation, and the United States of America, without pointing out that your understanding of it, and of the matters pertaining to the Second Amendment of the Constitution there, is not a product of your being British, but a product of your own inability to recall history accurately, and that your opinion is your own, and not that of a great many other Britons.

My family name faced far more # than your typical god-botherer. We didn't all flee these shores to escape persecution. We pretended to not hate the establishment when it suited us and continued with our rebellious ways in a more subtle manner.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Your personal history aside, your arguments using historical events to legitimise your embattled position on this topic are flawed by way of not being at all supported by the history which has passed between our nation, and the United States of America.

While I would always prefer cold steel over hot lead, a sword at my back rather than a gun at my hip, I also believe that our self defence laws, and the right to bear arms (which has its origins in the Bill of Rights circa 1689), have been significantly curtailed, and not in the public interest in all cases either. Do not use the stupidity of our government, to suggest that the U.S. ought to take after the U.K. in this regard! That would be the most outrageous promotion of ignorance since the last Bush presidential campaign!
