Hundreds of witnesses claim to have seen a fast shiny object followed by a groundshaking blast, almost like a plane going supersonic. It happened over the province of Gansu in china's northwest at around 11:30pm Saturday, local time.

Hundreds of people in northwest China's Gansu Province witnessed an unidentified flying object (UFO), and local police are searching for what may have dropped in the area, reports Xinhua.
Witnesses in Gansu's capital Lanzhou said that a strange shining object swept through the sky about 11:30 pm Saturday, followed by earthshaking sounds like bombing. They also reported that an ensuing tremble was felt within 100 sq km around Lanzhou, Xinhua said.

Sounds like it was probably a meteor that either caused a sonic boom (or several), or exploded prior to hitting the earth.
