I'm sure some of the members have heard of Galaxy Zoo , but for those who haven't, it's a website where you're able to look through pictures of galaxies and help to classify them, and report on any strange activity you come across. I find it really relaxing, and often classify galaxies if I'm trying to put myself to sleep. Some of the galaxies are stunningly beautiful, and although most are pretty standard, sometimes you'll come across two galaxies merging, or one that's really strangely shaped. Speculators can even discuss what they find with the community there.

All in all, a really interesting site for stargazers.

This is really cool.

The only thing is it seems to stop working if you confirm anything odd.

From here anyway.

Will try later.

But a great site!

I've never had that happen. At worst, sometimes a pop up appears asking if you'd like to join the sites membership.

Here are a couple of examples of really beautiful or interesting galaxies.

This is the most beautiful galaxy I've come across personally.

At the top of this galaxy picture, there's a paraedolia goldfish! At least that's what I see. Does anyone else see this space anomaly?

That is very cool. Thank you, I will check it out some more when I get time, but went through a few to see what it was exactly, and got hooked, will be spending some time there later on!

If that has whet your appetite check out some of the other Zooniverse projects. Galaxy Zoo has been around a long time and was the first of them. Others like Disk Detectivehave you classify things which may be planets being born to separate them from nebula and distant galaxies. There's also one called Planet Hunters which you can help spot exoplanets in Kepler/K2's data (several people have already found planets this way and have been credited as co-discoverers).

Lastly, the SETI Institute has one called SETI Live in which you classify various types of radio signals that are coming in live to help SETI scientists decide if it is interference or possibly extraterrestrial.

More and more, there are plenty of way the average person can contribute to science through programs like this.
