You've had a lot of answers here; most of them probably not as helpful as you'd like.

The simple truth is this:

Revelation isn't a book you can read in isolation.
It contains over 800 references to Old Testament symbols. Unless you understand these, you'll struggle with Revelation.

My advice to you is to read Revelation in concert with other texts.
The book of Daniel is key, as are elements of Ezekiel, and Isaiah.

I can't break all of these down for you in a single thread, so... you can either sit down with a commentary, or, you can find someone whose breakdown you trust.

My personal recommendation would be Chuck Missler. He has an entire series on Revelation that literally follows the text verse-by-verse. The first one is here:

This should help you. I had a thread with this mans whole Revelation series but they were deleted.

He's a very good teacher, you will learn from the beginning to the end with this series. Genesis to Revelation. Pull this to youtube to continue to next video.

Chuck Missler above is also very good.

Revelation means to reveal, it's not easy to understand on ones' own. But, once you do, even today's NWO will make sense to you and you will understand what's been going on and what will come.

Close the book and go back to real life. There's nothing but silly superstitious nonsense written by people from two thousand years ago who had no science to guide them and attributed natural events to some god.

That's harsh, sis. Find the middle ground between your position and your opposite.

the book of revelation is a 'road map' and 'time line' = a 4 dimensional diorama for humanity

it blends past-present-future & future-past envelopes of knowledge and clues or codes for the reader as witness to ingrain into their own Psyche

our inevitable future is already happened, and is chronicled in the Book
which uses a lot of 'dreamscape language' of symbology & metaphor to resonate with the readers' spiritual side
and thus make a deep impression upon the dedicated follower/believer....

understand, the Book is meant to captivate souls and to dervishly skirt around the natural world processes that requires death to propagate life anew

Yes, I think John the Divine was flat out psychotic. I read it several times and for me? It is jibberish.

the first part of revalation consists of letters from Christ to the seven early churches.

the rest of it has sections dealing with the past, the then near present and the end times and beyond. some people assume it is all about future events and they confuse the dragon dragging the stars with it's tail as the time satan is let loose during the tribulation. in fact it describes events that took place before Adam and Eve. it is the reason we are all here on earth in corruptible mortal bodies. the actual placement would be between line one and line two of the creation narrative in Genesis.

the story then goes to the events leading up to the beast, what happens then and what ends it.

then you get to the millenium and judgement and Hell. where you see not for the first time that hell itself is not eternal but it's consequences are final forever.

After that new jerusalem descends with God and The arK and a little (very little) is revealed about life in heaven for the saved.

the important bits of revalation are what the churches did to P off Christ. you don't wanna be doing the same.
the description of the original fall from heaven helps you understand the hidden theme of the bible that makes everything make sense. and finally how not to be fooled by the false messiah in the end times.

also revelation is actually completely in parallel to Daniel if you want to know more. Jesus says if you want to know about the end times to read it. actually he said

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

understand Daniel.

you can also look at it like this. Daniel and revalation restate the whole of the bible in broad outlines from beginning to end.

what confusing is it deals with the past semi present and future without telling you when it is jumping to a new time period. and it happens like that several times in different chapters.

this is the short version...

What is called the book of Revelation is a dream/ vision had by the apostle John. However there are a multitude of misleading beliefs about it.
The fact is it is a letter written by John of his “dreams”.The first few sentences lays the groundwork what it is ALL “about”.

The revelation of Yahoshua the messiah, which God gave to him, to show his servants what had been given to soon occur,

and he symbolized it when he sent by his angel to his servant John who witnessed the living word of God and the testimony of Yahoshua the messiah - everything whatever he saw.

Blessed is the one who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things that are written in it, for the time is near.

These are the most literal thing a written in the letter. The majority of everything is as John said “symbolized(signs). The letter was written in Koine Greek. The first thing to know is the word revelation is the the translation of the Greek word apokalypsis(apocalypse) which means unveiling or uncovered. It does not mean a great cataclysm as the modern definition has come to be known because of the false interpretation of Christianity.
The next thing to know is the word Jesus is the transliteration of the Greek word Iesous which is the translation of the Hebrew word Yahoshua. The word Yahoshua means Yahweh (the creator God) is deliverance(salvation).

The word christ is the transliteration of the Greek word christos the translation of the Hebrew word mashiach(messiah). It means the anointing or the anointed…the literally meaning of anointed is to rub or smear oil onto a person(a king or priest or prophet) to symbolize they have the power of the creator God.

These are not my “opinions” or gnosis or esoteric mystic meanings these are easily discoverable facts about those words.

This first portion of the 1st sentence lays the foundation what the “vision/dreams” were about. The unveiling of what Yahoshua messiah is.Christianity perceives this as the man Jesus of Nazareth the Christ and from there it is all down hill with a multitude of doctrines of men extrapolated from their interpretations of the scripture as to date has produced over 30,000(and counting) different sectarian beliefs of Christianity.

The apostle John knew this man very well. The scriptures say at Yahoshuas crucifixion he gave his mother over to the charge of John to take care of Yahoshuas her(who was his aunt) the rest of his life.In other words John had a very trusted and close relationship with Yahoshua. He already documented that in the gospel of John.

This was a vision/dream given to John to show him what it was really all about. The huge misconception is the disciples automatically knew. The fact is they were just as clueless as anyone else when Yahoshua walked with them. They didn’t understand what he said either even when he explained the parables to them.

Afterwards they began to understand more because now they were walking in his footsteps(more like crawling). The only “knew” the basics. They knew(because they no longer believed) thatYahoshua IS the son/seed of the creator God the christ.

It was no longer religious belief to them.Their religious Judaism was dying. They experienced how meaningless Judaism/religion was even when Yahoshua was with them but now they really knew because they experienced it first hand. This has far reaching implications the main one being Yahoshua nor the disciples “believed in or started Christianity.

One of Yahoshuas main purpose was to deliver mankind “from” their religion not create a new false religion to bind them. The disciples experienced this first hand as a process.John is the disciple who experienced it the most.He was the main witness to almost everything Yahoshua did while with the disciples. He was the only disciple at the crucifixion while the others hid in fear.He was Yahoshuas most trusted and close confidant(not Simon-Peter)

The point is John was the one chosen one of the few are chosen (disciples) the creator God “revealed” Yahoshua to the most. The vision/dream was all in symbols for a good reason. That was the only way John could communicate the testimony by writing. His purpose was not to”interpret” it but to give testimony to the unveiling of Yahoshua christ.

The fact is there is no “interpretation. That is the way the religious mind thinks and believes. They want to categorize words then manifest them into material events. However that is not what is happening at all.

For lack of a better term they are meta physical. In that sense they are not what man calls events at all. They are something beyond knowing and direct perception of experience. In other words John didn’t know what they were either. He even said so numerous times and he was told to just write what he saw (perceived). His experiences were baby steps(but giant leaps to everyone elses perception of him).John only knew what it meant .The unveiling of the creator God's deliverance. The details were forth coming.

Reason would state that if John did not know what they meant neither can anybody else.It is hubris to assume what John wrote can be known. If anything it is strong evidence it is like “the scriptures” (what is written) it is a testimony that testifies of Yahoshua christ. It is NOT writings to be interpreted then “followed” like a instruction manual.History should be evidence enough that that method is extremely faulty with extremely poor results.

It is a witness of the Truth. That is why it has survived for 2,000 years even though it is the most baffling book of the scriptures(the most read books in history). There is something to it that either attracts or repels in extremes. Some people live and die by their literal interpretation of it.Others perceive it as complete gibberish. Both extremes(and everything in between) couldn’t be more wrong.

It is a testimony that testifies of truth just as it’s 1st sentence states..the unveiling of Yahoshua the christ..in other words..the unveiling of the creator Gods deliverance by their power(not mans).

Christianity has preached for millenniums their false belief good news that Jesus saves(mostly from himself sending you to the eternal punishment hell if you don’t believe he saves you). That is not the testimony that testifies of truth at all.It is bad news and a lie.

The unveiling proclaims the deliverance of ALL creation (including allof mankind) of the creator God by their power…no religion required at all because al religion is a false lie.As the saying goes ..”All religions are different paths that lead to the same place”…nowhere because religion always falls way short of truth making grandiose promises of….if you just follow the method because blah blah blah…. God Loves you..unless you don’t love them back then you are punished..FOREVER..with torture!!!..and every variation know to man.

To finish the opening statement by John in his letter……

BLESSED…… is the one who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things that are written in it, for the time is near.

This is turned into method. All it takes is the method to read(study) or hear(by a teacher) the words of this prophecy and “keeps them for the time is near(or about 2,000 years or so)…blahblahblah…

As usual the words that are translated have been twisted into a another meaning. The words translated “one who reads” is anaginōskō which means to distinguish between, to recognise, to know accurately, to acknowledge.

The words to hear is akous which means to understand.

The word prophecy is prophēteia which means hearing from the creator God .

The word keep is tereo..to attend to carefully, take care of…

So John isn’t saying just read and hear it and something mystical will happen. He is saying when you read and hear you HAVE understood it with care what the creator God has said.He was not speaking of “reading” the letter he was writing he was speaking of the meaning and what would happened and that it would be caused 100% by the creator God…not a method of religion.

These two sentences are the crux of understanding the unveiling…and these two sentences have been twisted into religious doctrines of men so has everything that follows …..which is allegorical metaphor(symbolized in signs) has been twisted into religion.

To sum up ALL of what John knew and wrote of the unveiling.

“The creator God will deliver”.

That’s it.It doesn’t matter at all if you understand it.It WILL become a reality to you (and all of mankind) when you receive and keep it.Does the rest means something …Yes.But as John wrote… Blessed is the one”…..because for them… their deliverance is near.

Is it about all the mumbo jumbo doom porn channel the religious have tuned their mind into and are running around like a flock of chicken little’s screaming the sky is falling the sky is FALLING!!!…no.

That is ALL the unveiling is about. It is NOT about predictions or prophecies of past present or future historical events. That is what the religious mind believes or that it is all nonsense. Both are 100% incorrect in 100% different ways.

In that sense the unveiling of Yahoshua christ” is the most polarizing “thing” in human history. That doesn’t mean what is called the book of Revelation that is the testimony that testifies of the Truth.

Man has made God in their own image.Either a heinous buffoonish temperamental monster or ….nothing.Both are 100% incorrect. The book of Revelation serves as the witness to both. The destruction of the world by a revengeful hateful God and the blindness to the greatest gift ever given but spat upon.

Hello. It seems so open to interpretation, but it would be interesting if those of you that have perhaps studied this in more depth could give me a few pointers on the general idea, maybe some of the opposing viewpoints and your personal opinions.

Thanks

It would help if you could be more specific about what it is you are looking to understand about it. Also, it would help if you could provide some basic background information as to the degree of your biblical literacy. For instance have you read the entire bible? How familiar are you with the Old Testament? The New Testament? How long have you been looking into these issues, and what is it you are hoping to find in Revelations?

There are some great answers here already, but it would help us help you if we had a bit more information

As suggested above, if you are already biblically literate, Chuck Missler has a ton of info out on the net and on youtube regarding Revelations. I would also recommend checking out some of Walid Shoebat's interpretations. It's important to remember that there isn't really a consensus among Christian theologians when it comes to revelations, and Shoebat simply offers his own as a former Muslim.

So the short answer is that Revelation is probably the most mysterious book in the bible, and as others have pointed out, a solid foundation in the Bible (both old and new testament) is crucial if you want to make any sense out of it, and even then you are still left with the option of drawing your own conclusions based on any number of theories. This is no more apparent than in the doctrine of the rapture, as just based on timelines in revelation alone, you have 3 major theories.

What is the point of replies like this? The OP is looking for interpretations of Revelation. If the OP thought Revelation was completely fictional, would he or she be asking that question in the first place? Do you like the sound of your own keyboard that much?

There is a thousand years of peace predicted. There is a war that will truly end all wars. There is also something about a new heaven and a new earth. Also it is the only book in the bible that promises a blessing for reading it.
And that is all I am really sure of. Much of the rest is open to interpretation in my opinion.
