The year 2004 has been the fourth hottest on record, says the U.N. weather agency. The ten hottest years registered have occured since 1990. Scientists are concerned that the trend is to continue disrupting the global climate, increasing the intensity of storms, drying up farmland, and raising ocean levels.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- The year 2004, punctuated by four powerful hurricanes in the Caribbean and deadly typhoons lashing Asia, was the fourth-hottest on record, extending a trend since 1990 that has registered the 10 warmest years, a U.N. weather agency said Wednesday.

The release of the report by the World Meteorological Organization came as environmental ministers from some 80 countries gathered in Buenos Aires for a United Nations conference on climate change, looking at ways to cut down on greenhouse gases that some say contribute heavily to Earth's warming.

The extreme weather of 2004 extended to storms. Certain climate models predict more severe weather with the onset of global warming, but scientists say it is too early to tell if this year's storms are linked to climate change.

With the deteroation of the ozone layer global warming is a headline that will not go away. Year after year the weather is making headlines pointing to the warming of the earth and still people choose to remain in ignorance to the fact that the earth is slowly dying. With mans dependance on fosil fuels the warming of the earth is one that will not be stopped and we will see an increase in more severe weather along with the hotter temperatures.

This is interesting, but please remember that temperature record keeping began in the mid-1900's. As such, this does not fully account for the temperatures that may have existed prior to such formal temperature record keeping began. 1998 does come to mind here.

doom and gloom is on its way.like i said in many other posts. global warming will be our greatest threat.all this other stuff governments are wasting there time on is just a distraction to the reality that the world is not going to sustain us much longer.best thing will all can do is live in higher climates.away from low lying areas that could be flooded and stay away from very hot dry climates without the water supply.for our water supply will be the first thing to go then food will follow next.all i can say is i hope nasa is building bio domes cause where going to need them to sustain life as earth is winding down.

As I see it, we face 2 major threats - nuclear war and global warming. Both need urgent attention. There needs to be a global nuclear disarmament program, and we need to take positive and effective steps to curb the escalation of global warming and bring the planet to a level of sustainability. The facts are there - there is the irrefutable law of cause and effect, and burying our heads in the sand is not going to make our problems dissapear.

Economical reasons for not participating in ecological programs does not make sense - there is no logic in being 'rich' and extinct.
